Still Trying Hard to like my New HD ?
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:50:36 AM »

Having been out today for a ride on the new bike I am still trying to like it as is my dear wife Christine. We have read all the posts re moving tour pack back and I will be attempting this this week along with fitting new comfort rear passenger crash bars.A friend we met today at Doncaster Harley shop UK said its also worth swapping the left for the right rear passenger floorboards as this gives the rider a lot more freedom and comfort when paddling the bike back...reversing it stops the rear passenger boards from pushing into your back of your calf's! " Has anyone else done that fix?

I will also be fitting some Monster Ovals and the SE Pro race tuner later this month just need a few miles on the bike first.

Finlay I have asked about he "Fall over" feeling my bike gives you as you place it on the stand and the UK dealers say there are No Known issues???
I think that's Bull can anyone throw any light on a genuine HD report on the stands brackets etc?

Cheers

Some early 2009 Touring bikes had a different side stand, which did not take the new frame height into account. These bikes leaned quite far. Your bike should not have that side stand, it is a much newer built. When you place the bike on the side stand, the bike will move just about an inch "into" the stand, after parking. This seems to worry many people new to Harley. It is normal, and the stand is safe. The movement is actually the stand locking into place.

Ride safely,

I have the passenger hop off then fold up the floorboards before backing up, easier..On all the HD I have owned have been like this for me.

The kickstand does lean way over, there is supossed to be a fix p/n for it , there is thread on this site.

I just got used to it as being a short chit that I am, it is easier to get on from the "low" side now!  :P

I have swapped the rear floor boards on my bike and it gave my wife much more room and keeps her calf's from hitting the rear saddle bag guards. It has no effect on me at all when riding. The operation took about 30 Min's and was well worth the time spent for her comfort....

I too swapped the passenger boards.  It does help me, the rider as I can not always flip them up when I need to duck walk the bike.  I agree with needing to push back the tour pak and the discomfort of the saddle bag guards.  I had ALL the same first impressions as you have.

hmm taking the tour pak off for more comfort? back when my wifes back would tolerate 500 miles on the bike rather than in the sidecar the part she liked the most was the tour pak...

Hi, Yes its starting to look good on improvements, I swapped the passenger floorboards round yesterday That was well worth doing and knowing about , also fitted the comfort profile saddlebag guard kit  no 49179-09 that looks like it will help Christine.Have seen the rear grab rails on a picture somewhere, can't find part number-"Do they interfer with the saddlebag opening? and whats the general opinion of em?

Today I am doing a mod to the tourpack and fitting a rear rack light, and the nice chrome hinges. Then we will go out on "Ruby" again and we will report in. Thanks for all the banter and help.

Someone asked do we still have a Goldwing, well we do as we have a business related to Goldwing Accessories (and some HD stuff) but the hole object is to get away from Wings and try the HD'S the CVO fat boy I bought last year was real fun for me but not much cop for touring  2 up! lol

I am also looking for advice on setting up the Intercom is it best to swap the stock headsets for something like J&M or can they be set up better ? Still working my way round the Audio system and GPS .

Get the feeling you are not entirely satisfied with your scoot, thats a hell of a lot of cash to be invested in two wheels, think you probably need to get some decent miles behind you
More than happy with the Springer, didnt make the mistake of not knowing much about the Harley I was buying "his time"

The side stand bracket swap is for the SERG, not the SEUC. If you take your finger and run it behind the top of the bracket, you should feel some embossed, (raised) lettering, if you do then this is the new part

Get the feeling you are not entirely satisfied with your scoot,

Hi there Bogman,

Yes your right £25.5k on a bike is a lot of dosh to shell out but its like ow't I have learned you pay your money and take your chance. I am getting more into "Ruby" as I say in my posts its just a setting up thing and reading between the line lots of Harley Touring riders felt the same as me in the first instances. I am gaining knowledge all the time, even how to clean those roulette wheels!! lol........ So I will get there I hope ?

Hope your having a bit of springtime sunshine over there "Love Ireland" its just the crossing on the water that does me sometimes,

Well its a small world, we were stateside last week for 3 weeks and we all got on about English and American speaking and I do struggle with all the abbreviations you use in the US. But then again our American pals did not understand some of ours "Fortnight" was one. I will go and rub my side stand bracket now...

thanx again
