Tuner Help Please.
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:53:57 PM »

I have about two weeks to make a choice. Waiting for Jet Hot coating on pipes and other things to get here. Anyway what tuner would be the choice for the 09 SERG ? Basically all I'm going to do is put a K&N filter in, non cat pipes, 2 1/4 Fullsacs and tuner. Not really looking to do any real motor work. My dilema is the guy that is doing my work will put on anything I want but he personally dose not like the tts, told me there was too many failures. He reccomended PC-V, Super Sert, and a tuner from Technotronics. Is it better to have a tuner that works in unison with the ECM? Or dose any of this matter. The S SERT is about 200.00 more than the rest of the tuners. Keep in mind I know how to ride the bike, "BUT" I'm clueless how and why alot of tuners are different , and what makes them work.........................................Fuzz :nixweiss:

I have never heard of a TTS failure. If he is saying that I don't know that I'd trust his ability to tune your bike. Does he have a dyno jet? If not, I'd suggest you buy the TTS and tune it yourself. There is a new file posted here by Doc1 on the easy steps to v-tune your bike yourself using the TTS tuner. I've bought it for my last 4 bikes and have not had any problems--only very good experiences.

I have tuned a few of these already with SEST, TTS and Direct Link.  They yeilded great results.  You need to find a tuner that can tune with most anything.  There are a number of tuning devices out there that will allow the programming of the ECU directly.  You need to decide if you want to tune it yourself or have a qualified dyno tuner do the tune.

Ed, Just tuned my '09 SEUC with TTS. 118/94. Smooth , blast to ride...Find  a good  tuner in your area and let them do their magic...There is no substitute for a good tuner...Greg.

Fuzznuts,

You kind of have to trust the tuner (mechanic) as to which tuning system he prefers to work with. If he prefers to work with the SESRT then it would not be wise to purchase a TTS and vice versa. You will achieve much better results by using the system that your tuner (mechanic) is familiar with. The three tuning systems that I am aware of all work very well when used by someone that knows their $hit  :o :o :o

Planning ahead- some things to consider: How far will you go with modifying the bike? Are you satisfied with throttle response, & torque, do you just want to add a some fuel to cool it down? Will you later add cams- pistons- ported heads? - or just change the baffles, or add slip ons? If its just pipes/ baffles/ maybe save a few bucks and use a PC5. Its a 5 minute install.

Note that on fly by wire bikes- one of the good featueres of SESRT and TTS is that they allow for the fly by wire throttle response time to be trimmed to 1-1 for no lag and more immediate throttle response , I dont think the PC5 offers that tuning feature.

PowerCommander is a good reliable product that now offers a wider range tuning capability compared to the older PC3, but doens't tune near as broad as the SESRT or TTS. You can always sell it if you later want to get the TTS or SESRT - Because both the TTS or SESRT mate to your ECM and you can not transfer it to another bike.

Agree with all- the person tuning the engine is the key factor in all of this. Find a good tuner-

I was leaning toward the Super SERT, just wanted to hear a few opinions. It'll just cost a couple hundred more.than the PC-V or the other non harley tuners. The guy that tuned my 03 RK. and it ran like a raped ape. No issues. Some where in my travels through the SERG threads I read that it was a good idea to run a tuner that works along with the ECM instead of piggy back set up, as I had with the PC III  and no emissions . If I remember the concern was that the tuner, O2 sensors and the ECM should all be working together. I'm probably thinking way to hard on this issue. :confused5: :confused5: :confused5:

I used the SERT, power commader and now I purchased a TTS tuner. By far the TTS is much better. I like the ability to save the original MAP. I also like the idea of V-Tune. I have not used it yet but the instruction make it look very useable. I loaded a MAP that Steve at Fulsac gave me and it runs very well. I have not heard anything bad about the TTS tuner.

I've used PC, Sert, and TTS... On an 09 bike, TTS is really simple to use with great results. Never heard of a TTS failure, I think your mechanic is confused...

I have only used the TTS and it is great. Doc 1 is the best and will help you out.  He offers a discount on the TTS also.

Hey Fuzz- I never did hear back to know what kind of mods you were going to do on your bike?

I tend to believe in the Power Commander product over the SERT- only  If you plan to keep your bike generally in stock form( just changing pipes- or intake) the PC5 is really all you need. Keep in mind that  SERT  or SSERT is a "RACE TUNER", and unless you are going to make some significant engine changes like new pistons, cams &  head work- ect- you will only use about 10% of what that SERT is really designed for. Your paying for more than what you need.

Ragrep,

If you wouldnt mind, would you please elaborate on the believing in the power commander more for me, I would like to understand why you feel the way you do about this as well as where the 10 percent number you chose to throw out comes from.

Power Commander 5 seem to range on the internet from 299 to 385.

I paid 325 for both of my TTS
I paid 365 for both of my SERTS with Cables

In my area South East a dyno tune ranges between 200-400 with Power Commander and Local Dealerships here charge 250 to 400 dollars for SERT Tunes depending which stealer or shop you go to.

To me the dollars are minimal in difference ???

A person can save a little money on the tuning using the Power Commander depending on who tunes it and how much they do, but to have an added device that rides on top of the ECM and if it craps out how do you get home depending on how lean the motor is without the power commander?

I am not saying you cant get a decent tune with the Power Commander, but your rationale and statements such as the 10 percent number you are using to make your point in my opinion is from left field.   Alpha N vs. Delphi Pressurized Manifold?

Having the ability to do more if you want / needed too, why wouldnt you want to have this for a good tuner to leverage as well as for the future / choices when we are talking nominal dollars over what we have already spent on these bikes and accessories and chrome for them.

First off, I have not even seen the new PC, but things about earlier versions I found unlikeable were the fact that it acted as an add-on to the factory ECU. Instead of modifying the tables in the ECU it actually modifed settings after-the-fact. I ran into a lot of issues each time I did more modifications. The fact was that PC did not have the ability to remove enough timing from the map I had in the ECU... Kinda patch-worky was my opinion. The average owner really couldn't do much with the earlier PCs either, it had to go on the dyno with every change I made $$$$... Like I said, I haven't used the new one.

The sert really required a dyno to get things close too, but it least it could modify the "actual tables" inside the ECU.

The maker of the SERT designed the TTS mastertune with VTune and I find it the easiest and most efficient tuner for a guy who does not own a dyno. I am really impressed with the ease of use and the results from the TTS. I think this tuner is really nice for the average guy who may make additional changes and not want to pay $$$$ dyno tunes over and over...
