Chrome lower fork slider install help/questions on FLH
« on: April 16, 2009, 07:57:27 PM »

I was thinking of attempting to do the chrome lower fork sliders on my wife's 09 FLHX.  Any help/tips would be appreciated.  Currently I have my 05 shop manual and parts book.  09 books on order.

Some people say you can replace the lower sliders without removing the upper fork downtubes?

I see that George's Garage makes a "split" 41MM seal/bushing install tool that does the above?

Does an 09 have both conventional or conventional and cartridge fork(s).

Anyone just purchased "chromed" sliders from California companies?

How hard is it to get the 6MM bolt out of the bottom of the slider?  What type of head does it have?  Recessed?

Yes, I have read the manual, but until I see it apart, sometimes hard for me to picture.  Maybe best to remove the complete forks and send to dealer/independent?  Some I have called will not do it.  Just trying to save money and learn something along the way.

Thanks in advance.  Bob

Its a pretty easy job to do. Yes you can change them without removing the legs but to do it properly they need to be removed. The upper sliders covers are not chrome (they are polished stainless) and should be changed at the same time. The legs have damper valves (not cartridges).

I have chrome sliders in stock that I have a California company do the plating for me. Not sure why you ask but their is one that i would say away from.  The 6mm bolt is an Allen socket and needs a 3/8" drive long Allen to remove it. A hand impact typically is all you need.

Got the lower legs changed out tonight with new seals, drain plugs, and 6MM alen bolts with washers in the bottom of the legs.  Left the upper tubes in the triple trees, removed the retaining rings, and slid the old lowers downward in a slide hammer fashion and the lowers, bushings, and seals came apart easily.

You have to open up the lower bushing so it and the other bushing and seal will come off the upper fork leg.

I ordered a split seal driver from George's Garage that will drive the bushing and seal down in the new lower but could not get enough slide action to fully seat the seal.  So I removed the fill caps and loosened the pinch bolts and upper forks slid easily out.  As Jim stated, he takes them out of the triple trees.

It is much easier to seat the seals properly to get the retaining rings in and also quite easy to fill them  with new oil.

No pictures of the tear down was taken.  Hopefully I will have no seal leaks or drain plug leaks.  Not a hard job.

Some people have stated they use a piece of 1 1/2 or 2" PCV to set the seal.

A fellow on Ebay has a driver that attaches to the upper fork tube with allens and you use the lower fork leg as a slide hammer against the seal.

The best way is to take the forks out of the trees.  You also have to make sure the lower stops stay on the dampners on reassembly.

A couple nice features on the 09 frames:

Can use a staright grease gun end to easily grease neck bearings.

No rubber bumper stops on the upper fork sliders.

The rear calipre now bolts to the axle anchor (not one piece anymore).  Easier to change rear wheel/tire.

Me too - mine that is. And if I ever get a pair of shocks that work good I'll really like it.
