Deer Dyna
« on: April 18, 2009, 05:22:55 AM »

Yesterday at around 5:30pm I parted ways with a couple riding buddies to go home and about 2 miles from where we split I hit a flying deer at about 50mph.

I escaped with relatively minor injuries (or so i thought at the time). I didn't see the deer at all until it fell, seemingly, out of a clear blue sky! It was about 7-8 feet in the air and came down centered on the triple tree as it tried to jump across the road. The small sport windshield I have probably saved my life as it deflected the dear over my head!

I went down hard on the right side and immediately flipped over to the left. I had somehow kept the grip on the bars and it slammed me to the ground and then I bounced back onto the bike as we slid about 80 feet down the centerline to the right hand shoulder of the road. My left forearm has some minor road rash. I arose shaking and took stock of myself and my right pinkie and thumb have some very minor road rash but I felt relatively OK.

Two cars in the meantime just passed me right on buy as I tried to flag them down!!! As i stared incredulously as they passed me by another vehicle from behind stopped and offered to assist me. We got the bike upright and I called my wife and the County PO-PO. My wife and a buddy with his trailer showed up 45 mins later and we loaded it to take home. Waited another 15 mins and PO-PO never showed up!!!! Took the bike home and by the time we got it unloaded I was starting to come down from the adrenaline rush and was starting to hurt.

After 3 hrs in a packed emergency room finally got to see the Doc and found I have a broken ankle. (Non displaced fracture) Cast and crutches til I see my Ortho Doc Monday.....We will see from there.

Thank you all in advance for your prayers and well wishes! I know I will be giving thanks for a long time to come. The lords hand was definitely on me.

i know how sore u are feeling i once did a road slide at 90kmh, got up n kicked my damm bike, i wasnt hurting 2much and told the medics i was ok, bike wasnt towed and i was given a hire car to get home, changing gear was painful as i later found out i had a fractured wrist and ankle was also well swollen. Your right the adrenalin rush hides the hurt for quite a while, hope u have a quick recovery and your scoot is repaired as new

Thank the man above that is all you got.  I think he was looking out for us last Sept. on one of our long trips.  Coming through deer country & a truck towing a rock jeep climber was stopped in the middle of the road waving us down, he just hit a deer w/ his front right fender & asked us if we saw it laying in the road behind us.  Must have just his the deer right so it was able to make over the fence & down into the trees.  Scary feeling.......

Saying my prayers for a speedy recovery for you!!!!

Sorry to hear about your crash. Going down sucks no matter how minor the injuries.

Here's to a speedy recovery! Get the bike to the dealer and let them and the insurance company deal with the repairs.

Hang in there, man!

Been there, done that.  Hit a deer last Oct.  11 breaks on seven ribs, cracked some ribs front and back, road rash on right leg, and a sore finger on right hand.  About 12,500 dollars damage to the bike, was off work 12 weeks.  Got the bike back Feb. 24, 2009 and have almost 2000 miles since I got it back.  Read this the other day,  "Everyone crashes, some get back on, some don't, some can't."  Hang in there, get the bike repaired, heal up and go riding!

Hit a deer August 2005 - 80mph on Interstate 90 in Minnesota.  Cracked sternum, seperated shoulder, broken wrist, thumb and finger, bruised lungs from the sudden stop.  Bike and deer were DOA...  I recovered fully...

Thanks for all the encouragement.

Took her in to the dealer this afternoon and they totaled the bike.

Looking around I found a few still on the dealer floor!   Hope to get a full replacment by the time we leave for E.S.

Thanks

Tim

We have a bunch of those "flying deer" around here.
I have never hit one with the Harley, but I had one jump over a 8ft highway fence right on top of me when I was riding my bicycle. If you don't see them at bicycle speed you will never see them at motorcycle speed.

My wishes for your quick recovery.
