Audio plug-in fell apart-help needed
« on: April 20, 2009, 10:25:25 PM »

Went to plug in my front headset receptacle yesterday.  The one on the tank.  The silver cap ring and black surround fell off in my hand.  The plug itself fell back into the cover/console on top of the tank.   I looked up the repair in the service manual.  There are 27 steps that include removing the seat, cutting some cable straps, removing a 12-place Deutsch (?), side cover and etc....

I guess it's off to the dealer as it's still under warranty.  Heck, the dealer is only 100 miles away and I don't have anything else to do  >:(.  I thought it would be something easy to fix, like changing out the transmission  :nixweiss:

Maybe easier to fix your self than a 100 mile ride.
need to grab plug with needle nose pliers and pull back through the hole.
need to hold it there while putting cap and clamp back on.

I thought it was threaded, not spring loaded

I like your idea.  I'm just venting.  But it's not spring loaded.  It just sort of fell back into the console when the ring came off.  I tried to grab it and pull it out a ways to see if I could fit the snap ring back on but there is just no room to hold it.  and the minute you try to press on the ring, you push the connector back into the oonsole.

The connector door is spring loaded and there is a threaded nut inside it. Take the console off via 3 screws, Two under the filler door and one at the seat nose. Remove the gas cap. Lift the console off the tank. This may be difficult due to the rubber gasket between the tank spout and the console, just pull up and it will come off. The rubber gasket may stay on the filler spout, remove it and put back onto the console for reassembly. You then can hold the connector in place from the inside, install the connector door and screw on the nut. Re-assemble in reverse order. Some silicone spray (or WD-40) on the inside of the filler to canopy gasket will make reassembly easier.

Jim, you have that right! that gasket is the hardest part getting it straight and even.

no smoking allowed when doing this, the gas cap is off while doing this!

I give a spray of silicone before I pull the canopy, then a scribe around the neck (to let the silicone between the neck and gasket), pops right off then

I had the same problem.  hd-dude has it right.  I did it w/o instructions, took maybe 10 minutes.

Masking tape!!!!!!!!!!!!
Use masking tape on the gas tank around the canopy.
Hell, cover the whole tank with masking tape. It is very easy to scratch the tank by moving the canopy or laying it over to one side.
Silly I know, but masking tape is my best friend when working on my bikes!!

Brad

PS. Do it your self!
It will make you feel very proud when everything is back together.................As long as you don't sctrach anything.
