Garage Door Opener Troubles
« on: October 25, 2005, 05:49:24 PM »

Just picked up my Haze a week ago- What a great ride... I'm still playing with all the goodies.  I can't seem to get the harley garage door reciever to recognize the headlight switch.  Anybody have any tips???  I'm sure I've got everything hooked up correctly.[smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Rebel,

Welcome and Congrats on the purchase of your new ride

What style of garage door opener you have?
What's the age of the operator?

When I hooked my HD opener to my Craftsman Opener it required changing the wire connection.
Dang if mine worked after I installed it, I figure they are bullet proof.

Mine is a Craftsman too, 1994.  But I'm not sure it's the connections, when programming the Harley receiver, the manual says to hold in the button on the hd receiver and the light on it will begin flashing, at that point toggle the headlight switch, high to low or low to high and then the light will go out.  I can't even get the light to go out.  [smiley=confused5.gif]

Rebel, you've got one of three things going on.  Transmitter failure.  Receiver failure.  Or thumb failure.  The most likely option is the thumb failure.

Hold down the little button the receiver (the piece hooked to your garage door opener).  The rock the headlight switch back and forth; and back and forth.  It's got to be in pretty quick succession; but not too quick.  On mine if you rock it too quickly it doesn't work.  If you rock it too slowly it doesn't work.  Got to learn the rhythm.

If it never makes the light blink, and since the light on the receiver is on, it's more likely to be a transmitter problem.  Take your hand and trace the harness from the transmitter back through a couple of connectors all the way to the headlight connectors.  Make sure both of the plugs you pass are tight.  After that, take it to the shop for new parts.

Damn, sorry Rebel.  Just in case they don't ask remember to take your receiver back to the shop as well "just in case."  Might save you a trip.  Fortunately if it is the Xmitter at least they don't have to tear out a bunch of stuff to get at it.

Good luck!

If you have the Harley receiver mounted too close to your garage door opener it will not work. I initially mounted my receiver up by the opener since I had 110 volt power right there. Did not work. Moved the Harley receiver to the wall (had to run an extension cord to get power) and then hooked up the wires from it to the push button for the garage door and it works perfectly.

Ultra, I've got mine right up by the opener unit.  Wire tied to the support bracket the motor hangs from.  The important thing is just to keep it's antenna spooled with a little space of its own.  Did have to tinker with that a bit for best reception.

Mine's about as close to the opener as you can get.  No problems whatsoever. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Mine is also plugged in just above the operator and works perfectly. From quite a long distance too. I programmed it plugged into an extension cord while holding thr receiver in my hand while sitting on the bike. It doesn't need to be wired to the operator while programming. After programming I wired and plugged in. (divorce and single living has taught me many ways of doing things without an extra set of hands - well, some things. . . )

Mine opens every garage in the neighborhood...I have lots of cool new tools!

Just kiddin...mounted about four feet from door opener switch...works just like book says. I was shocked.

Might try extension cord and placing unit closer to bike to see if will receive signal...then mount to wall. But sound like defective transmitter or reciever.

Hi jeffj-
No success.  I ended up taking the front fairing off to see if the transmitter light was on, and... of course, just my luck- it wasn't.  I called the "stealer" and they had to order a transmitter.  I'll give an update after the new part is in.
Thanks-
Rebel
