What tires?
« on: April 26, 2009, 10:08:27 PM »

I am sure this has been discussed, but what tires are you running on your Ultras or Glides. Especially you 09 owners. I have 5k on mine and am leaving for a trip to the Smoky Mountains in a few weeks. We expect the entire trip to be around 6500 miles and I am hoping to get home before I have to change. My Road King and the 06 SE Ultra I had back tire was good for about 12k and I never replaced a front that had less than 20k on it.

I am also looking to replace my rear tire on my 2006 SEultra.   I want the best tire for better handling....  what do you guys suggest?  Not sure the size of my stock tire but I would love to get a bigger width tire as well....  keeping the stock rear wheel though.

I've run Dunlop's (didn't like at all), Avon's (OK) Michelin's (better) and settled on many sets of Metzler's.

Decent wear, great traction and handling.

Dunlaps will last you longer because others are softer and handle better.

I've given the Metzelers a fair chance to impress me.  They did...............until the sidewalls started cracking.

Switched both bikes to Michelin Commanders.  Really like them so far.  Stick better than Dunlops and Metzelers, and are less expensive.  Appear to be wearing better as well, but still too early to tell.  I like the ride much better than either of the previous brands I've run.

I continue to put good miles on Dunlops on both bikes and like all about them. Tire mileage continues to improve and they've always handled all that I've thrown at them and have even been 'forgiving' when I over-rode them.   :o  I see no reason to try other brands  :)  har!  :drink: spyder

I remember those days when I said the same thing..........then the strike.  That was reason enough.......well.......unless I just wanted to ride around on rims or not at all.  During the process, simply became accustomed to different tires.......that didn't track rain grooves, or grated metal bridges........that corner better.......got better mileage (I'm curious about how "tire mileage continues to improve" using the same tires without adjusting the way the bike is ridden......unless rider adjustment is the mechanism.  Dunlop is a good tire, but economics has taught me there are better handling, more forgiving, longer wearing, and less expensive tires out there.   :coolblue:

The 'tire mileage continues to improve' comment was in reference to the newer Dunlop rears on my SEEG giving better mileage than the Dunlop rears on the Softtail.  I realize it's a different tire and their claim of improved mileage on that tire turned out to be true, at least in my experience.  The tread 'tracking rain grooves & bridge grates' is the only thing you mention that I have experienced as a negative with the Dunlops (and the price, which I'm happy to hear now has come under competition with the Michelins).  spyder

Chanman

I have had many Electra Glides and have always gotten between 7 and 9K miles out of the rear tire.

The 09 has surprised me.

I left home with 9600 on the clock and now have 10175 and there is still another 1500 to 2K on the rear tire.

I guess there is something to be said for going to a 180 from a 130/140.

And I like it!

Unless I am mistaken, I don't believe anyone except Dunlop is making replacement tires for the 130/70B18 and 180/55B18 sizes on the 2009 SERG at this time.  I am not sure about the sizes for the SEUC.  A lot of the dealers do not even have Dunlop replacements in stock yet. I have no doubt Metzeler and others will be coming out with them soon.

I am also looking to replace my rear tire on my 2006 SEultra.   I want the best tire for better handling....  what do you guys suggest?  Not sure the size of my stock tire but I would love to get a bigger width tire as well....  keeping the stock rear wheel though.

I think your rear tire is an MU85B-16, which is basically the same as a 140/90B16.  You might be able to go to a 150/90B16 depending on whether or not your drive belt will clear.  Either would work on your stock wheel.  I have always heard it is best to keep the same manufacturer's tires front and back, so if you go to a different brand on the rear, you should replace the front as well.

 :( :( :(

At present Dunlop is the only tire for the 09 touring series.  And yes they are expensive relative to the 08 and prior years.  No competition.

That said, the new Dunlops handle well and appears like they will last well past 10,000 miles  Better than the old.

I'm sure Metzler and Michelin will offer replacements.  Soon I hope, getting ready for my second set.

Make sure if you get Metzelers that are manufactured in Germany, do not buy the the one manufactured in Brazil, they do not last as long and are having sidewall issues. My last Brazilian Metzelers only lasted 6,000 miles where the old ones would last me approx. 10,000 - 11,000 mile.

Now, I run Dunlop E3s on my 04 B/B Geezerglide
