Diagnosis?
« on: October 28, 2005, 10:34:16 AM »

This is getting annoying.

Took the tach off...cleaned everything.

Dropped new plugs in.

Checked the coil...removed all contacts..blew them out with compressed air...covered the exposed wires with electrical tape.

Reinstalled tach and coil.

Fired the bike up. Skipped a little when cold but once warm runs OK

tach seemed stable.

Put it under load...tach sporadically jumps..but bike not hesitating.

Diagnosis:

module?
coil?
wires?
tach?

deity of your choice forbid...wiring!

I'm thinking of upgrading to the screamin' eagle module and coil. But, I'm not in a hurry unless it's got to be done.

Thoughts?

The tach gets its signal from the ignition module so I doubt its the coil or plug wires. Is the bike running ok, no misfiring ect? The most likely culprit is the tach. I may have a module you can try. What year is your bike and can you tell me how many pins are in you ignition module?

if you are considering swapping these out, i'd say do it not that much money to get better spark and you rule out 2 of 4 possibilites

Thanks for the love!

That's why this place is the first, and really only place I go to get advice.

It's a 99...But I think I'm just going to take naitram's advice and stop by the shop on my way to work and swap it all out.

Thank you so much for the offer. You're the balls

(in New England..being called "the chit" or "the balls" is a good thing)

Got the module and coil for $188

not bad...

They didn't have black wires for an FXR in stock...

How does a dealer not have wires for an FXR...are you kidding?

Anyway...I'll go grab 'em from a shop near my house.
