A friend of mine installed a Jim's 120 in his '07 FLTR immediately upon delivery in the summer of '07. Motor was stock as delivered from Jim's, was tuned with TMAX-AT, and had Thunder header exhaust. Returning from Maggie Valley to Northern VA this weekend, a ticking noise developed. He initially attributed it to excess heat and shut the bike off to cool down. After restarting, the noise got progressively worse forcing him to shut it down and call for a trailer to get the bike home. Further inspection and tear down suggest that a lifter roller failed resulting in the destruction of the cam chest components. It will take a complete teardown and rebuild to ensure all metal particulates have been removed from the engine prior to rebuild. As luck would have it he is outside the 12 month warranty and just at 12k previously trouble free miles. He called Jim's and was told someone would argue his case for some kind of assistance but he's not overly hopeful at this time. I would think they would be extremely interested in learning the details of the failure first hand. Perhaps not.
I recall that Jims had issues with earlier versions of their lifters, but the problems were reported to have been fixed. Anyone out there seen or heard of similar instances with the recent Jim's 120 motors?
I also had a bad lifter Grenade my Jims 120 in may 2007, it tore up the whole bottom end. The engine was just under the Warranty Period, I do not remember by how long. At that time their was a recall on the lifters, however I was never notified by them.
We got a hold of Jims and explained what happened and along with help from Charlie Lawlor of Short Block Charlies who built the engine, we sipped the engine back for inspection and Jims replaced the complete Engine along with their new generation of lifters no charge, replacement engine ran great and still runs great with a new owner.
I would still discuss with Jims, if you haven't already, also have the engine builder discuss this with Jims. If the Lifter (could have been the old style) malfunctioned, I think that they should replace the engine.
The HD SE Lifters are made by Jims, I think. In my opinion a High Performance Lifter should last more than One Tear and or 12,000 miles.
Good luck on your claim.
