Strapping Down
« on: October 28, 2005, 01:49:18 PM »

When you guys stap down the seeg, where do you tie in on the back end. Do you take off the bags and grab the frame on top, or just below the bags.  And up front do you grab the bars or the frame center? If you have any pics please post.

Thanks    [smiley=cherry.gif]

Strap it down...as in trailer it? This is a question for the eastern guys cause out west we ride em [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Seriously though I would strap to the handlebars and the rear floor board supports

The few times I did trailer my bike I stayed away from the handlebars. Being that the SEEG uses a one piece clamp you could stress the bars enough to crack them. I used the neck of the frame and doubled up on the straps (4 instead of 2). For the rear I used the passenger floorboard brackets. Worked great on an 800 mile round trip. Good luck.

Ivnig,
Being one of those Eastern guys that need to trailer at times I might suggest to you, Get a Bike Pro wheel chock !! This chock enables you to ride into a cradle that allows you to just STEP OFF without anyone helping, no kickstand. You then strap the tire for the front, and the rear off the floor board mounts. Good to go for as long as needed. You cant believe how easy it is, and no strap issues on any part of the bike. www.toyboxsales.com  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=drink.gif]
BTW big bonus your not compressing the front end [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Buy a Bike Pro first, then strap lightly from the inside of the handlebars in frt and floorboard supports in the rear. All your doing is making it steady with the straps in case of a impact (accident) the Bikepro holds it vertical, the straps are just insurance. I have no problems this way, I do use "rabbit fur" on the soft straps over the bars. Bike Pro sells a secure strap that goes over the frt wheel, it will not work on our bikes, it hits the rotors.
This is my first trailer since dirt bike days 30 years ago (and they weren't road worthy). Have towed about 2500 miles in last year and bike stays very steady and secure. Bike Pro is one of the best "gimicks" that I have ever bought. Loading and tying down are safer as well as easier.
By the way, I have a 6 x 12 Pace Legacy Gold with fully lined interior, helment rack (dual), electric brakes, HD drop gate, Alum wheels, Mannington Supreme Black/White flooring ($35/yard) and polished treadplate runner for bike, Screwless sides, white with gold graphics. It is for sale if anyone is interested.

I actually trailer my bikes a fair amount,,, I usually strap on the front frame right where the cross piece is welded onto tthe frame  and on the rear run a tie strap around the crash bars located right in front of the bags and pull the straps toward the front. You dont want straps pulling forward and backward as it will loosen up. alwas have you straps pulling the bike in the same direction into the wheel chock of the trailer.   Ps I have never so much as scratched a bike in many long cross country hauls.

I might also add I have heard of some using a block of wood under front frame to have a solid base instead of try to compress your front shocks. Makes sense to me. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I used the bike pro on the trip to Sturgis this year, 2000 miles,we used the soft strap extentions on the handle bars and on the back bracket where the tour pac gets mounted.Four straps on each seeg,we compressed the suspension's by one of us sitting on the seat and pushing on the ceiling of the trailer, never had to retighten they stayed solid the whole trip. Yeah, 'er 'uh, hd-dude,
Your lack of experience in Haulin' a Harley, sticks out like the gonads on a tall dog!  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] Tie the front crash bars down, and the right rear crash bar, to the front.  Three fingers under the brake line to the top of the front fender, from the bottom triple-tree.  Pingle Wheel Chocks work fine.  Trust me, it will ride to Hell and back, no worries.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] At least, that is what will hold the Ol' "Led Sled!"  I doubt it would take more for a mere SEEG! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] There endeth the lesson.  Later--HUBBARD

When stabilizing the rear of an FL I have always used the frame crossmember as an anchor point. I like the fact that its way down low and the straps won't rub the muffler's or the bags when positioned correctly.
For the front I always double stake the front using extra floor d-rings for extra security. I learned early on that strap ratchets can pop open, tie-downs can break etc.etc.
An extra set of heavy duty d-rings on cost about $10.00 each and are easy to install, just be sure to use extra large steel washer's or cut a steel plate to place "under" the floor to keep the D-rings from pulling up through the floor.
Oh yeah, and check on your bike's and the strap's tension each time you stop for gas.

Dude, give Hub a little slack there.  He needs to trailer that black bike back and forth between places.  That way he's got someplace to do all that polishing she gets.  When all that's done, if it's not raining or too cloudy of course, then he rides her wide open!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Thanks for all the info. I did a trial run using the 4x4 and some shims under the frame with two straps off the bars to the front d-rings. Also have a wheel chalk that the front tire sits in and will run a stap through the wheel and chalk.  The piece of wood seems like the ticket! It stiffen that baby up good! And for all you critics of trailers, I'm leaving from PA. in March to Daytona and H.D. hasn't come up with a snow ski attachment yet. Ha Ha    ;D
