Jet-Hot coating on my new non CVO headpipe
« on: April 28, 2009, 12:40:40 AM »

I bought a new 96 CI headpipe and crossover pipe from my MoCo dealer for an '09 Ultra Classic that will be Jet-Hot coated and installed on my SEUC4. I had my MoCo send the part directly to Jet-Hot. I got a call from Jet-Hot today and they told me the original quote had to be raised by $50 because they need to remove the chrome on the headpipe and crossover pipe so their coating will adhere properly. Jet-Hot sent me a picture of the two pipes. Do all the 96 CI pipes for an '09 Ultra Classic come chromed? I haven't read of others getting charged an extra $50 when they bought new headpipes without the cat. I'm assuming the MoCo ordered the correct pipes for my needs. Here below is a picture that Jet-Hot sent me of the pipes they received from my dealer. I'm not worried as much about the price quote as I am about getting the correct parts to reinstall on my cvo bike.

Same here, they charged me for the chrome removal. It was not a suprise though. It was included in the price estimate I received.

I wasn't told that on my bid and haven't received a call yet. Expect them back any day now. I'll let you know what they do.

Bike pipes is just one small service Jet Hot does.

I would probably guess the majority of their work is with auto performance parts that are not chromed, so the "remove chrome" is standard on our bikes.

Who didn't tell you about the chrome removal issue? Each email I have from the folks at Jet Hot mention it will be an extra $50 if the pipes are chromed.

It was Kevin at Jet-Hot that didn't tell me about chrome removal when I got the original quote of $210 plus shipping. He then called me yesterday and said it's $50 more after the pipes arrived. I've seen some before and after pics of members here that had their pipes coated and some of the before pics didn't look like they were chrome but maybe that's because they were used and turned blue and got colored.

Chrome on the head pipes is not the same quality chrome on the heat shields etc.

Just had mine done. outside powder coated , inside ceramic coated. 100.00 No shipping. The business is about 3 miles from my home. Good for 1200 degrees. Nitro bikes run about 900 degs so I figure my pipes won't even come close to that. 3 day turn around.......................................Fuzz

OK. tomorrow when I have more time. Just did a before temp test. 30 min ride 1/2 around town 35 to 50 mph, 75 to 85 on super highway. 345 degrees rear jug at header pipe exit. 310 deg at front jug same spot. 310 out the right tail pipe. Next test will be after the pipes and tuner go on the scoot.........................................................    Fuzz

Randall,
Jet Hot may or may not know which motorcycle pipes come from their respective OEMs with chrome.  Like Duane mentioned, they coat alot more stuff than just bike pipes.  I'd wager bike pipes are a small fraction of their work.  When Rod called them to set up the coating of my FatCat headers for my SE and my V&H headers for my FLHR, he told them they were new pipes and needed to have the chrome removed prior to coating.  Here's a link to a picture of what my FatCat headers looked like before Rod shipped them off to Jet Hot.  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=27625.msg487408#msg487408

Henry,

Thanks for your response here. I'm not concerned about the price difference. From what other guys have told me here, I'm satisfied everything will work out just fine with Jet-Hot with these pipes on my bike.

When you shipped your headers to Jet Hot, did you remove the exhaust flange and the retaining ring or leave them on?
