I hope you took care of your welder

We do work for each other all the time.  He just helped me drop a 36 inch diameter hickory tree, he got 50 % of the wood.  I wired his 30 by 50 work shop.  So it all comes out in the end with us.

If you are not lucky enough or patient enough to get a non-cat header assembly from your local dealer, you can buy a brand new one from Zanotti HD. I paid $314 plus shipping just for the header. You'll also need gaskets, retainer rings and maybe new clamps. If you need part numbers, you can either buy the parts manual for touring bikes or just go to your dealer and ask to see the touring bike parts manual and get the part numbers from it for what you will need.

 :soapbox:

Actually there are two sets of header pipes ion the US.  The CVO's all come with the cat as does California bikes.  Stock 96 09's outside of California do not have the cat.

I know, I bought a set from a CA dealer that had the Cat.

There are not as many take-offs available as usual on the 09s, reportedly because the stock header is relatively efficient.  The one dealer out of 4 in the local area who has one wants $240 for it.

Seems high.  But a lot cheaper than new.

I'm waiting for my new pipes from Jet-Hot. My service manager at my dealer told me I only needed new gaskets and I specifically asked about retainer rings and clamps. I told him I'd rather be safe than regretful later. Should I get retainer rings too, maybe even clamps?

From what I have read there are little to no gains going to the V & H power chamber pipe for the 09 over the stock non cat 96 in 09 head pipe.

My local dealer lets customers know this, so they have yet to have any 96" take offs from 09's.  There for I did the cut, remove cat and weld with mine.

Randall, I bought new retainers and clamps just to be sure everything is starting at the same point. Considering how much people paid for these motorcycles and for that matter the new non-cat exhaust headers, why scrimp on some very critical fasteners? It's just not worth it to me. Good luck.

And as of yesterday, Freedom Harley still has one they have been sitting on for $240.   While I do want the new headpipe, I have an issue paying that kind of money for a headpipe that in a few months I'll bet I could find for $50 if not free.

 :'( :'( :'(

My dealer has three 09 cat free.  Sells them for 150 plus $75.00 to put them on.

However, they don't last long.  Most of them are pulled off the 09 right out shipping crate because the new 09 owner is changing pipes.

I am assuming you are in the Denver area since you mention Freedom Harley.  Go to Rocky Mountain HD and ask for Roger.  He will fix you up with a takeoff 09 non-cat headpipe for a $50 donation to their pizza fund.  He did it for me and for a friend of mine.

If you can do without your bike for a while, I think one of the best options is FullSac. Send them your cat header and stock mufflers. They will remove the cat, re-weld the header,  replace stock muffler baffles, and install a TTS system mapped for your configuration. Good people with strong customer focus. Just my $0.02 from good experience, I am not an employee or investor.
