ABS troubles after chaning tire
« on: April 29, 2009, 09:37:09 PM »

A few weeks ago I took the rear wheel off my 09 SERG to fix a flat. It was all pretty straight forward, changed lots of tire before but never on a bike with ABS. Everthing seemed OK at first but now when I stomp on the rear brake it grabs at first them totally lets go, not the way the brakes worked before the tire change. Any ideas?

Not familiar with the HD ABS but you could have broken the sensor wire or sensor during tire change.  If the rear is like the front the axle goes through the sensor and is next to the hub.  Looks like that sensor COULD be installed backwards.  Think I would check that and the wires first.

The bike does a "ABS check" everytime it is started, a check light on the dash. It does go out once I'm rolling so it appears the bike thinks everything is working correctly. I will take a look at the sensor and try it flipped around.

Do you have the manual for the bike?  If not, I'd strongly suggest you get one and make certain everything went back together correctly.  Brakes are nothing to be screwing around with.

BTW, I don't believe you should need to be rolling for the ABS light to go out.  I assume it should work like the automotive systems, and the light should go out after the self diagnostic routine without having to move anything.  Regardless, something isn't right and if you aren't equipped to perform the full diagnostics routine then you need to get it to a dealer and let them hook up their equipment.

Jerry-

The ABS light on the HD's flash continually until the bike drives away a few feet and goes off (if everything is ok).

I just had both wheels off on an 09 with ABS..  I would say that the rear brake sensor has rotated around and not in the weld anchor anymore or the wires are pinched.  Take the RH saddlebag off and the sensor wires should be pointed forward and go up the swing arm.  The sensor goes between the wheel and the rear brake calipre anchor.

Let us know what you find.  Bob

Thanks for setting me straight on the H-D version of ABS Bob.  I keep forgetting that H-D always seems to find a way to take proven technology from the automotive industry and do peculiar things with it.  I find it very strange that the ABS light goes out even though the brakes obviously aren't right.  Kind of makes a person wonder why they bother to have a diagnostic routine built in if it doesn't alert you to a problem like this one?

I checked the sensor and it will only go in one way, the wire is off set, so that isn't the problem. I did turn the sensor slightly so the wire is "pointing" forward. Once the bike has been going for a while everthing seems OK. It's just at slow speeds, under 20 KM, that it acts up. I called the dealer and I'll be taking her in next week.

Did you use the same tire (Mfg, profile, etc) for the replacement? If not, there could be sensor issues. This is discussed in your Owners manual.

I'll have to check the manual about that. But yes, the exact same tire went back on, D 407.

On the up side though, things seen to be sorting themselves out. Not sure if the caliper had to "self adjust" but it seems to be working fine now. I went for a long ride yesterday and everything worked great. Today I had a couple of stops to make around town and everything is 100% again. Any ideas about that?
