Gas mileage
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:04:05 PM »

My '06 SEUC (Fat Cat, Zippers 575, Zippers hi-flow a/c, Race Tuner, dyno tuned twice) runs great but gets lousy gas mileage.   30-32 mpg with easy throttle use running 70-75 all highway miles.  I'll burn 1/2 to 3/4 gal. extra on a tank than buddies' 110's.  Gets to be a big nuisance when gas stops are far apart.  What kind of mileage do similar set-ups get?  Any suggestions/solutions?  My dyno man suggests that maybe it's just my bike.  TIA!

There is no reason you should not get at minimum 38 to 40 mpg at highway speeds.  Do your pipes and/or plugs look rich?  I am sure you have considered that it could be your tune.....

I agree.  Should get at least 38.  Bike must ne running rich all the time.  This would run great but get terrible gas mileage.  Also, one of my CVO buddies increased the timing (about 2 degrees on average especially even more around 3,000 rpm and leaner from2750 to 3300) on his 07 SERK and improved his gas mileage by over 6 mpg.  He uses ZIPPERs TMAT and wideband O2 sensors.

The bike runs even better (more all around power) and gets decent if no good gas mileage.

I think I would suggest that it's your dyno man.  Does he have a dyno with a load cell so he can do part throttle pulls to simulate cruise conditions, or does he just do the WFO type of tune and call it a day?  What AFR is he using for cruise conditions?

A decent tuner should be able to get you at least 38-40 mpg at a steady cruise (60-70 mph).  Even if you pump it up to 80, still should be doing a lot better than 30-32 mpg.

Thanks for the input.  The tune was done under load, differing rpms, timing adjustments, etc.  Definitely not a WFO only tune.  My speculation is that the AFR was dialed in to stay near 12.5 across the board, at WFO and cruise....think I'll check back in with the dyno man and see if we go towards 14.0 at cruise.

Go get (find) a good Dyno tune, my Jim's 131 is getting me average 38 MPG... Not all Dyno tuners are equal,,, some good and some bad.. If you're in northern cal area i can lead you to a couple highly recommended tuners. PM me if you would like this info...

I have a 06FLSTFSE2 Boarzilla pipe, zippers ac and had it tuned by a good tuner and have smiler resalts.I wonder if it has to do with the small injectors that were used that year?I talked to my tuner and he did give me a couple of adjusted maps to try and help with my problems and he did have to lower the injector size during tuning to get things right. My Dyno was 97/99 and I get between 33mpg getting on it a little[up to 5300rpm or so and at 70hyw]I have gotten 40mpg but that was putting around town and not twisting the throttle at all.

 :)

My tuner is a guy who races bikes cars etc.

He is well known in South Texas.  He likes 13.8 for steady pace.

FYI

BTW:  Lazano Brothers out of the San Antonio area.  Has won many races on HD bikes.  Albeit very custom.

I would get him to adjust to 14.1-3 for cruising mode and have him set it up richer above 40-50%Throttle position. You can also get him to adjust for rich mode based on throttle position and temperature, i.e. hot days cooler running. The new tuning packages out today offer extreme flexability(I'll stop short of making recommendations, go with what your tuner knows best). And i have learned there are not a lot of talented tuners that know how to work em. There are a lot of good tuners out there and know one thing "performace" and nothing on Economy. You need someone that understands these tuners and willing to set you up for both worlds. Definitely worth giving up a few Horsepower. But you may pick it back up in Toruque..

Considering that the typical Touring rig is only running at somewhere between 10 and 20% throttle while cruising down the highway at 50-70 mph, it shouldn't be very difficult for a tuner to set the bike up for both economy and max performance.  The easiest and least sophisticated method is to set the AFR for economy at 10-30% throttle, and max performance at 40% and up.  That's why I asked earlier if the tuner just did WFO performance runs on the dyno.

And a good tuner can even ritchen up the rear cylinder to keep it cooler at cruising throttle.

i recently had a build.. cams some valve work and a new tts mastertune. I did find someone thats really knows how to tune.   my milage went from 30-32  to something close to 40mpg. and my hp is at 115.  Just find the right tuner and it should make a world of difference.
