« on: April 30, 2009, 10:19:05 PM »

i picked up scoot from dealer today nad his comment to me was, hey brian those neck bearings were really loose, ya think! i havent had time to put miles on to check it but on the ride him it didnt shake, so i think they got it, they did however tell me that if you have over 1,000 miles on the bike, it is NOT covered under warranty, what a bunch of crap, so hopefully that's all the trouble i'm goona have. ride safe. brian

Hope that got it Brian... Many comments out there about preload on the neck bearings... How often do we need to check, before they are finally right ?   :nixweiss:

Why is that?  Check your maintenance schedule, but I'm almost 100% certain that there isn't a steering head bearing check listed as part of the routine maintenance at 1000 miles.  If the '09 has the same maintenance schedule as my '05, the bearings don't get adjusted until 25,000 miles.

Based on what I've been reading, there are a lot of these bikes with loose head bearings at very low mileage.  Sounds like a MoCo problem, not a maintenance at the owner's expense problem.

I would say it is a MoCo problem or a pre delivery set up problem.

I havent experienced the death wobble, but I had been noticing a small clunk when applying the front break abrubtly while moving the bike forward & backwards in & out of parking spaces, the garage ect- figured I better have it checked during the 1000 mile service today- I had to ask them to do check it, as GRC said- its not on the 1000 mile check list- all though maybe it ought to be considered a "Critical Fastener"- in any case they said they evaluated it &  it was ok- with in spec- which means they probably didnt do squat with it.

FWIW - mine occasionally clunks too. Others here have mentioned it as well. I rested easier after reading of so many others experiencing it.

Loose bearings at such low mileage means one thing. The factory assembly has a glitch. Something in the bearing assembly is not fully seated or not tightened to speck. You would think this would be a problem the manufacturer would feel responsible enough to fix with a smile... at no charge...and maybe an apology to boot!  :drink:

i let it check ba the dealer ,
the headbearings are ok and the clonk is caused by the mounting of the " swimming-brake-slices " , but it is ok like it is, ( wonder whether this name is ok .)

#1, I'm pretty sure the 1,000 mi service says to lube the head bearings.  This is the first time the neck has been filled with grease.

#2, I believe the service mentions checking the tension (via "swing" test).  Regardless, I always perform this simple test.

With your bike on a jack it's easy to check head bearing tension with the swing test.  This is where you pull the bars all the way to one side and let go.  Too few swings, it's too tight.  Too many swings, it's too loose.  This is all in the Service Manual (my FIRST purchase with every bike I own).  :2vrolijk_21:

Swing test is what they did on mine- at 1,000 miles- and only after I asked for them to check it. However I  think the swing test is only a general indicator- to get at the steering head to re torque- would require removing the faring- (no way that's going to happen as normal maintenence with the dealer unless there is a  serious issue.)

As for the clunk- they told me it was "stiction" the shock tubes making that noise. hmmmmm..... :nixweiss:

True, but if the swing test is OK there would be no reason to remove the fairing.

They've been having problems with head bearing tension for a while.  My 07 did clunk for a long time until I went in and tightened the bearing.  Funny, no more clunk now and the swing test is still right where it should be.  Any dealer that's tell you anything other than head bearing for a front clunk when you apply the brakes on a low mileage bike is blow smoke out their arse.

I had a "no hands" low speed wobble, went to the dealer, swing test performed.. Its supposed to swing about 3 and at most 4 times, mine went 6... definate head bearing issue. Tightened up to specs and now swings 2 times... A "hand assembled" bike shouldnt have these issues!

The manual says 3 swings, one large when you let go, a second back the other way and smaller than the first and then a small third swing back to center.
