When to change oil first time?
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:08:29 PM »

I am expecting delivery this afternoon on my SERG. I know these come with synthetic oil. I don't really understand that considering most people will tell you to break an engine in first before installing synthetic oil. Also many suggest changing the oil at 100 miles. Since the bikes come with synthetic should a change be done at 100 miles or so or just wait til 1000? T.

Not to  :jack: but I am curious as to why you don't use the Redline 20W50 motorcycle oil in your engine?

No right or wrong, Redline, Mobil 1, Amsoil are all great uses, I will say i notice less engine noise and heat with Mobil 1

I have the service deal that they gave me when I bought the extended warranty. They will only put HD parts in the bikes even if you bring in your own oil. So I am stuck with the HD stuff until 1000 miles or I will just have to do it myself and let them check all the other stuff, (yeah right). When I had the service agreement in the past I think all they did was just change the oil. T.

At least at my dealer, they have no problem putting different lubricants in for you, but you have to foot the bill for the product you want put in and they don't offset it with what you didn't put in.

Yeah, they said they had an issue with a customer supplied part that failed causing some legal issues so instead of trying to make a list with exceptions they made one that was all inclusive to cover their ass. T.

Some dealers have Redline products and will put them in upon request.  I know of at least one (Freedom HD) in the Denver area.

Synthetic oil doesn't adversely affect the break-in of the engine, no matter what all the wive's tales say.  If it did, do you really think Porsche, BMW, Corvette, etc., etc. would use synthetic as initial fill in their engines?  In other words, don't worry about it, it's a non-issue.

As for the first change, there is no compelling reason to change it before the 1000 mile service.  However, if it makes you feel better you could change it at 500 instead of 1000.  I wouldn't do both, however, since it would just be a waste of money and resources.

We always used regular oil for break in and at 50 miles or 2 hours on a diesel motor.

Synthetic oil doesn't stop rings from seating, it just takes them a little longer. What you want to do is seat the rings and get rid of the metal particles as soon as possible, before they cause premature wear and long term damage.
