Recall on SE Air Cleaner
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:25:51 PM »

My local dealer had a notice up about a problem with the SE Air cleaner kit part # 29260-08

There is a problem with the air cleaner element, part # 29244-08 either having holes in the filter media or the rubber element glued around the edges of the air cleaner element tearing.

I got home and checked mine and sure enough the rubber gasket material was tearing, also noticed a lot of oil blowby inside the air cleaner but thats another problem.

I think the air cleaner is too tall and when you tighten the 3 screws that hold down the element to the backing plate it deforms the metal plate some and puts excessive pressure on the rubber gasket material and eventually it will tear.

Even though mines past the one year replacement time the dealer is going to oder me another one.

Don't know if this has been posted before but figure I would pass it on if it wasn't.

I noticed mine had oil on it also. So what causes that problem?

DD, they have been having that problem ever since they stopped buying the filter elements from K&N and went with a cheap knock-off washable paper element.  Saw the exact same issues with both the rubber (?) gaskets falling apart and the paper developing holes back in '05.  If you want to really fix the problem, buy a real K&N filter element and tell Harley to keep their cheap POS.

The oil in the filter is caused by pressure buildup in the engine.  Hi Revs will do that, combined with good oil pressure.  Not much you can do except ease up on the gas....  And who among us is going to do that????

Thanks for the info on the K&N

Do you happen to know the K&N air filter part number that will fit the SE Stage 1 kit ?

How come the oil isn't sucked into the throttle body and into the engine ? I would think the oil would want to go that way because of the vacum.

Last time I took the air filter off about 1/4 ounce of oil fell down from behind the air filter where it had collected at the base of the filter.

That is a nice filter, I've got it on my 00 SERG.  What I'd like to know is, is there a K&N filter to replace the stock air filter on the new SE 110's, the oval filter?

I called K & N the other day to see, but no, not yet...I recall there is a place on the site to request one be produced if not available, I think many of us did that last year some time, maybe another barrage of requests might help.
