Bub 7 w/crossover & TTS Mastertune
« on: May 02, 2009, 03:15:37 PM »

After being bikeless for the last three weeks since my SERK was getting the recall done and I was out of the area, I was pretty excited to pick her up from the shop this morning and get her home quick...I've had a set of Bub 7s and a TTS Mastertune sitting around for 2 weeks as silent reminders that I had no wheels to take advantage of the good weather.

Pulling the stock mufflers and headers turned out to be easier than I thought.  Only 2700 miles on the bike in the last year, so not much time for dirt and grim to make things difficult to pull apart.  The starter bracket and O2 sensors proved much more difficult.  MOCOs obsession with hex key head bolts just baffles me.  And the 2 bolts that hold the exhaust bracket to the starter couldn't have been more difficult to get out.  I know it's my own fault for not having a set of hex key sockets, but seriously, those things are everywhere.  Before you make fun of my, this is my first Harley and I'll give you more ammunition later.

I ended up making a trip to borrow a tap set to I could fix the threads I messed up when attempting to install one of the O2 sensors.  When threading it in, it stuck a little so I put the wrench and gave it a slight turn.  Big mistake as it took me the next 20 minutes to get it out with salvageable threads left on the O2 sensor.  In case anyone is wondering, the O2 sensor bungs take a 18mm tap with a 1.5mm thread pattern.  Only an hour or so to install 2 freaking sensors.

So 4 hours into the job, I was ready to mount the head pipes.  I pulled out the head gaskets that my dealer gave me this morning when I picked up my bike and just my luck, they were too big.  The ones I took out actually fit inside the ones he gave me.  So I'm at a work stoppage unless anyone lives within an hour drive of Ansbach, Germany and has a set of head gaskets I could "borrow".

Oh, but before I tore into the exhaust, I saved my factory map and uploaded the tuning map I was going to use today with no problems what-so-ever.  The TTS Mastertune software and guides made the process very simple.

Maybe I can finish the exhaust Monday evening after work.  My luck it'll be sunny tomorrow just like today, and I'm 2 head gaskets away from riding. :(

Found a set of exhaust gaskets at the Ansbach shop.  Pretty sure he overcharged me since he charged me for each of them instead of the pair so I paid 25 euros for the set.  Going to go back and get the part number he used to see if he'll give me half my money back or another set of gaskets since MOCO only lists them in pairs on their website.

Exhaust is installed, might have a small leak at the rear jug, going to adjust the pipe tomorrow a bit and try to re-seat it so it doesn't leak.

Made the first run with the TTS Mastertune and so far, so good.  Program is very easy to set up and use.  Weather and daylight permitting, I should be able to make at least two runs tomorrow and a third if necessary.

The pipes are much louder than I anticipated, but they sound incredible compared to the stock pipes.  None of my neighbors yelled at me when I cranked it up and let it sit to warm up for my first data run.  The echo in my garage area wasn't too bad, but it was after 8 pm when I started making noise.

Let's hope for good weather tomorrow.

Finished the install last Wednesday after doing doing a total of 4 data runs with the TTS Mastertune.    So far, the bike runs great...definitely no issues with power.

As far as the Bub 7s go, none of my neighbors have complained about me waking them up when I come home from work after midnight every now and then so that's always a good sign.  There's a nice crack when you first start up, sound at 50 km/h in town is very noticeable, but not obnoxiously loud, and the rumble at highway speeds again is noticeable, but not loud enough for me to need earplugs with a full face helmet.  If I ever decide to buy a half helmet, you bet your a$$ I'll have earplugs in.

I've had to adjust my driving a little due to the increase of dB from the pipes.  The sound of the stock pipes at 4000 rpm is now what I hear at 2500 so I find myself trying to shift up from 6th gear.  I put 380 miles on today and got 38 and 41 mpg, up from the 35-36 I got with the bike bone stock.  Only difference besides the pipes and the tune was I was on back roads 90% of the time and rarely broke 70 mph and I didn't have the windshield on today.

Overall, very happy with the TTS Mastertune and the Bub 7s w/crossover.  Now if I can make it 1 more year in Germany without getting dB tested, I can head back to the states without a fine and without having to put my stock exhaust back on.  I'm almost positive my pipes are over the 95 dB limit.

I'll post more pics of the exhaust tomorrow.  One of the many benefits of living in Germany is being able to take a day ride down the romantic road and see the Neuschwanstein Castle.  The pic's a little fuzzy cause I took it with my blackberry.
