Stater Is Leaking Oil?
« on: May 03, 2009, 07:10:59 AM »

I have a small leak on the lower left side of the cases.

The drips end up on each of the lower case bolts.

I thought that it was oil that had pooled under the oil cooled from the last oil change, but I cleaned all that up last week.

Each time I ride now the drips reappear.

I have a feeling that it's comming slowly from the line that goes into the stater... I've never seen an HD stater before... it there oil in there?

If this is the problem is there an easy fix besides wiping the friggen thing every day?

Murph, the stator is mounted to the left crankcase half on the outside, so it's actually in the primary chaincase.  So yes, the primary oil gets thrown all around in there and will seep out at the wiring if the grommet isn't sealed well.

I don't know of a simple fix for a leak, since the grommet installs from the inside.  I don't believe smearing a sealer on the outside is going to help (plus it looks tacky and non-professional), so the advice to see your dealer is a good idea.
