Do you use the intercom, cb and headsets on your SEUC?
« on: May 03, 2009, 11:16:23 AM »

The more miles we put on the 09 SEUC the more we use the headsets for communication between us and many other things.

Being sort of ol school I never realized how nice and convenient the cb and intercom are.

In group riding having communication on the cb is great.

As we ride down the road we tend to listen to the music through the headsets instead of the radio blaring.

Using the Zumo we listen to tunes from it and directions.

When we went to York I rode to Delaware and had Jim Bissonette install the phone interface on the 09 SEUC.

We bought new 3/4 helmets last week and the sounds we hear now are great.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend this week about using the headset and was talking with him about upgrading the stereo and speakers.

He asked, why do all that, you listen to everything through the headsets anyway?

Good question.

With the music, the Zumo, the cb, the intercom and finally now the phone being heard through the headsets I struggled for a good answer.

Riding solo with no one around was the only reason I could think as to why I wouldn't use the headsets.

What you think?

Riding in a group or with just one other bike do you use the headsets?

I have two helmets, one for solo and one for group. Like you, I really like the ability to communicate with my wife (she no longer has to bang on my helmet to get me to slow down - she can just scream at me over the intercom) and using the CB to talk to other riders adds a lot to the enjoyment of the ride.

I have a 3/4 Jett 2 with the headset and mic installed, J&M. this is great for group/highway riding. But for around town or truly solo riding, I use a 1/2 carbon fiber. I have the J&M handheld mic to transmit. on trips I bring both helmets.

i use the headset all the time - ive had the speakers on for a total of a few mins for two bikes over nearly 9 years now.

i removed the rear pods - i run a sidecar and they are just in the way & they are never on.

id give up most every do dad on the bike - but not the intercom, headset, bluetooth phone [i never talk on the phone, i just answer and tell them ill call back in 10 mins and find a safe place to park and talk]

Thanks guy!

We took a ride this evening and with both 3/4 helmets hooked up it doesn't get any better.

I've never tried the headset or intercom.  I've turned the CB on to learn how to use it, but I couldn't talk...just listening through the speakers.  I bought a handheld mic yesterday, but I don't think I'll get much use out of it around home.  I only have one other friend that has the handheld mic on his bike, and nobody else has headsets in their helmets.  Part of it is the fact that we have no helmet law here, and if I'm not crossing state lines, I may or may not have a helmet on at all.  When I do wear a helmet, it's a half helmet...unless we are talking the dead of winter and then I throw on the full face, but then I don't have too many other brave souls around that will ride in the temps I ride in.  I keep thinking about buying a nice helmet with a communication system in it, but then I realize it's just another toy that I personally won't get much use out of.  I only bought the mic yesterday because I figured I may actually get some use out of it on the trip to Eureka Springs and then I'll have it ready for other trips.  Plus, I'll have the 8 speaker HogTunes setup installed possibly by tomorrow night, and I'd like to get some use out of that, since I paid for it.

If I lived in a helmet law state, I might be more tempted to spend the money, but as it is, I'd just be talking to myself.  I know very few people here that wear a helmet all the time, and if they do, it's a half helmet.  In fact, I wish more people I ride with were equipped to communicate.  That would be enough to move me to action.  It sure would be alot easier than waiting for a red light to talk or waiting until a gas stop.  I would think that there would be a lot of advantages to being able to communicate between bikes.

We hooked up the intercom when my wife was first starting to ride on the back, before she started riding her own bike. The first day we went on a cruise, we get out to the open country and just start putting along, what a beautiful day, suddenly chatty Cathy starts motorin tellin me all about how nice everything is an isnt this great, after 15 minutes of non stop chatter I unplugged the mic, tossed the cord and went back to my wonderful sounds of silence, or listening to the tunes. Havent used it since

I have never used mine.  The dealer even talked me into buying another headset (only one came with the bike) when I purchased her.  Now that I have the detachable tourpak and Hawg Wired system I haven't felt the need.

Maybe I will hook it up next time we go on a trip - but my wife likes to talk too :huepfenlol2: so maybe I won't. :huepfenlol2:

If you bought the Harley headset, you'll be sorely disappointed with the sound quality for music.

What you think? Riding in a group or with just one other bike do you use the headsets?
SBB

I use CB, XM, Weather, AM/FM, Intercom, Zumo (with XM, traffic & weather), and bluetooth phone w/wiring mod, and I use the headset almost exclusively.  I also appreciate the lack of chatter sometimes, but my wife really doesn't like to carry on long conversations while riding.  It is really great to be able to speak to each other without screaming, when it is necessary.  I've used the CB on a couple of group rides, and it was invaluable.  I don't engage in too many phone conversations while riding, but it is very convenient to be able to make and receive quick calls and have the other party be able to hear you.  The microphone wiring modification was definitely worthwhile.  As far as music & all of the other items, the headset is clearly superior to trying to hear speakers in the wind and turbulence.  I use the H-D headset that came with the bike, and I purchased an IMC Motorsports headset for my wife - at half the price of the H-D.  The quality is about the same.  I use a modular helmet year round, and my wife uses a 3/4 helmet.

Chip, I've been using headsets since I got my first Ultra in 01.  Wouldn't leave home with out um!

You may want to consider a set of J&M Elite headsets.  Had them installed when we bought new helmets a couple of months ago.  The sound is 100%+ better the the HD sets.  Your welcome to try mine at CHL next week!

I can hear my wife fine speaking without a headset or shouting. Can't stand to wear anything but the half helmet anyway. As far as the CB, never even read the booklet on that.  I don't want to talk on the CB or phone when I'm riding. Don't want to listen to the stereo through a helmet, I like the sound from my speakers.  I ride to disconnect from the world and connect with the isolation of the road. Communication with anyone takes away the pleasure of getting away from it all when I ride.

Just answering the question of the thread,
