Clearview Winshield installed, but...
« on: May 03, 2009, 01:59:38 PM »

I was happy to finally install my new Clearview winshield, but something to consider when deciding on height...

A few of my friends who ride Ultra's and Classics love their Clearview re-curve shields and suggested that I do the same and order one.  After riding a couple of their bikes to try it out, I was very satisfied with the way it worked at keeping the wind off of me while maintaining the low profile look which I think looks great!

I decided to go with the same 8" height that most of my friends went with because it did the trick.  HOWEVER, what I didn't think of was the fact that my CVO Ultra has a heated seat which is about 3/4" higher due to the wires etc. in the seat.  On my first trial ride with my new windshield I quickly realized that 8" just won't do, so it has now been installed on the wife's Ultra and I have ordered the 9-1/2" version.

Trial & error I guess.

It is really a great windshield and I look forward to receiving my new taller one.

Thought I would pass along my thoughts of my experience as I know many on this site are trying to trying to decide which height to purchase.

Just something to think about that I never did.

Great shield and John at Clearview is a great guy to deal with.

Grizzly,

I went with the Clearview 9 1/2 inch recurve on my 06' FLHTCUSE and at 5' 10" I can see over the top of it while still being shielded from the wind.

Tom,

What are the measurements from the top center of the shield to to start of the chrome windshield piece?

Thanks,

Grizzly,   How tall are you?   Would the height difference of a heated seat be the same with the Corbin?  I am 6'5" and am thinking of getting one of these.  I am sure the 9 1/2 would do it but I would like to be sure.  Also did most people go with the smoke or dark tint?

I'm 6' 1", have a Corbin dual tour, and a smoke tinted 9.5" Clearview (matches the Freedom Wings) and it just is tall enough.  If I lift off the seat even just a little bit, I can feel the air flow.

I'm 5'8" with a 29" inseam, which is why I have low profile shocks and progressive springs and the bike fits me like a glove... As mentioned when I tried out my friends Ultra with the 8" shield it worked great.  But on my bike I was getting a lot of wind and could only conclude that the actual seat (with more padding) is higher.  The 9-1/2" should be perfect.

All my friends went with the "smoked" screen and I decided to go with the "dark grey" one, which I think goes better with my color of bike and matches the stock dark bat wings better than the smoked.  Another point of interest is that when I parked my bike beside my friends, both with the same size (8") shield, mine appeared shorter.  I suggest that it is the darker color making it look shorter, which I like.

BTW, now two of my friends wish they had gone for the "dark grey as well... Both have Ultras, one has the Dark Blue Pearl and the other has the Black Pearl.  I also agree that the dark grey would look best on them.

Take care & ride safe,
Grizzly

i have the  re-curve and I love it. I'm 6ft 2" and it seems to be perfect . I do like to look over it and most of the time I'm on the stock seat. I did have a jel-pad put in it or I could never use it at all. Wouldn't want to let someone on the back. That would be mean.

OK, I have read and looked at all of the current and past post and have become more educated and therefore more confused.. I am looking at the KW, CBailey and Clearview windshields and am asking the following..Please note these questions are for the Ultra only I am sure there is a ocean of information on the Road Glide but apart from enjoyable reading, that is not my bike and has no bearing on my questions..Most of my road time is long haul with little around town riding so the low speed impact of each is not as important as the high speed benefits....

KW states that their windshield will provide additional down force on the front of the Ultra. As lift and high speed wobble is an issue on these bikes does this solve the problem. Second, is there substantial increase in noise due to the design of the shield which will eliminate any rider and BSR comfort. And third is the 10 1/2 inch the way to go if this is the way to go.

CBailey states that their shield will eliminate buffeting and noise but adds no additional down force to the front of the bike. Is the noise and wind elimination great enough to warrant one of their shields being put on an Ultra. There is no question their design is unique and not for every rider. Second is the benefit from their shield provide any relief for the BSR.

Finally the Clearview, They do not make anything except the re curve. It is my understanding from reading that the re curve design adds lift to the front of the bike. Has anyone seen of heard of this. And is the benefit of the re curve enough to put it above the other 2 shields.

Any information related to this would be much appreciated. One needs to make an informed decision....

I know you asked in regards to SEUC and I ride a SERG, but regards to each companies claims to downforce, lift, I have rode all 3 makes and the only thing the creates lift is THROTTLE. at 120+ with the CV the bike handles Great. But the front end has come off the ground with all 3 shields, but that's just me. CV has hit the mark in my most humble opinion. for what its worth.

OK, I have now ordered my new 9-1/2" re-curve shield in "dark grey" tint and ended up selling two more friends on the idea of a new shield who ordered, one the same as me and the other an 8" re-curve in "smoked" tint.

Can't say enough about this great product and the excellent service received from John at Clearview!

BTW, my original 8" dark grey re-curve was claimed by my wife for her Ultra and she loves it as well!

 :-\ :-\ :-\

In too have the same questions but I have tried the KW 10.5" and am returning for three reason:

1.  It actually measures 12" inches just like an HD stock shield on a non-CVO of which is right in my site line.
KW was great and are shipping me a 6.5" (the next smaller size).  I am skeptical because it measures like an 8" HD of which might be good for me but I am looking
for less two up buffeting.  The 10" HD is fine for me, but does have lots of buffeting for my wife.
2. It has lots of vibration at idle and some at speed.

3.  It does appear to reduce wind noise below say 65 but is no better at speeds above this.

On the positive side, the side wind does go down a lot as indicated.  I could not tell the about the down force.

The Cee Bailey has a size for everyone and a buddy let me ride his 12" SSC which is representative of an equivalent 9" HD.  It was very nice and the material appears to be very thick as indicated.

No knowledge of the CV but seems it has a good rep.
