In Mississippi, a license plate is called a tag. The head tax guy in the state got to thinking about motorcycle tags this past summer. Motorcyclists, he thought, were not paying enough for their tags. Being a socialist, and therefore a subscriber to the belief that your money is only that amount that he decides to allow you to keep, he decided to increase the ad valorem taxes levied on motorcycles, which he collects by issuing a tag annually.
I got my tag renewal notice for the next year on my 2005 FLHTCSE2 in the mail today. When it was new last year, the head tax guy only wanted and collected a modest $264.00 for the tag, plus 7% sales tax on 30 large. This year, the head tax guy only wants $733.00 from me for the privilege of riding on the state's crumbling, lumpy, unmaintained roads until November, 2006. Once I give a local garage another $5.00 to inspect my bike to make sure it is safe and will not harm me or others, I will be good to go, as long as I pay some shylock another $670.00 for insurance.
I want to start a tax riot in the Magnolia State. I want to run the socialists out of the state. I want to make Mississippi a place where a guy can make a dollar and keep at least half of it as a reward for his labor. Any Mississippi members on this list are invited to contact me and discuss how we might get these government Robinhoods off our backs. My e-mail is tgerity@jam.rr.com, and I am real serious about taking this forward to get the taxman's hand out of the pocket of the motorcyclists. Drop me a line if you feel like joining the cause.
