Believe me, I've taken a hard look at the way I've been riding lately...and its no different than how I've ridden my 04 Road King.  I could get 10K from the rear dunlop 402 and the front would require replacement for weather cracking before wear!  And ZERO cupping!

Went to the dealer yesterday and they test rode the SERG...confirmed the vibration/rough ride due to cupping issue.  They called HQ and the MoCo agreed to replace the front only...they said they knew of no issues with the back.  We'll see how she rides after the front is replaced.

The MoCo said to the dealer that they were to exhaust all in-stock 407 tires before replacing with 408s.  My dealership had one 407 in-stock but ordered a 408 for me...good on them :2vrolijk_21:

Regardless of how the 408 performs, since the rear is starting to cup now, it'll only eat itself up in no-time.  My trip to the Keys will put on 1,500 miles at least.

When I get back, I'm ordering some ME880s.

Well...the tire is on backorder...didn't have any idea when it'd come in :'(  Seeing the pic below of TN's bike with a 408 on the front got me concerned.  With the inverted "V" ...where id the water going to be diverted to?  With the "V" its pushed out and away from the center contact patch of the tire.  With the reverse pattern, the water would seem to be collected and forced towards the center contact patch and cause or aid in the tire hydroplaning   What was Dulopp thinking?

I called the dealer and am going with plan "B"...mounting the 407 and going to the ME 880s next.

Geeez.......I had a 67 250 Matador and did many enduros......pulled like a John Deere with that heavy flywheel.

after that, I had a 360 Frontera, as I recall it was a 75 model. :P

My tire was replaced under warranty this morning with a D408F. As far as the tread design, I thought the same thing, but, take a look at an ME880 front tire and you'll see the V on the Metzeler channels the water towards the inside also, and the ME880 was one of the best tires I ever rode on in the rain, My feeling is this tire will be just fine in the wet.

My D 407 F was in bad condition , changed today , but no D 408 F available in germany , Again a D 407 F on the front wheel .
 But in the bike-paper there is  fixed the 130/70 B 18 65 H and they mounted a D 407 F 130/70 R 18 63V .
They told that the R is better than B and the V is better than H , so no problem .
BUT : The 65 is fixed in the paper and they mounted a 63 .
Problem , there is no 65 available and this 65 was never built but written in the paper . The stoch´k tire also was a 63 .
 Wonder wonder wonder .
I never was allowed to drive one feet with that bike with that tire mounted .
Now i will get a permission from the   MoCo that i can mount this 63 tire .
Noone ever noticed this , not harley , not dunlop , not the german headquarter and not the homologisation-specialists .
But I did - Häääääääääää .
What do you have in your paper and what have you mounted on your bike ( stock ) ? 63 or 65 ?

the big difference here is the R=radial. the 63 is load rating, a little lower.  V is a higher speed rating than H.

now ask for a radial on the rear tire.

the serks used to come with radials. :nixweiss:

I heard that the AV71 (front) is in short supply.  Both on order and will stay in the garage till I need them.  Never did like the Dunlops even though they get good life, the Avons give a better ride.

Have you checked the balance of the tires?  :confused5: spyder

I had the cupping issue on my second tire and it was real bad (about half the normal tire life).  I've gone through several more since then and no cupping.  Stock front end.  I'd have to say that somewhere along the way some of those little sticky wheel weights came off from that second wheel. :nixweiss:

yep.  And a couple of riding buddies.....we're all having great results and love not having the ugly wheel weights mess up the looks of the wheels.  No 'down-side' so far with only the initial cost hurdle to deal with.....hope to never return to the 'weights'.  :drink: har.  spyder

The dealer called me again and changed the front-one into a D 408 F.
But now i have a D407 in rear and a D408 in front , does that matter anything ?
My front wheel is " singing " when i am not driving straight on the middle of the tire , not from the brakes definitely .
I thought that this was because of the cupped tire , but it also was with the 130/70 R 18 V and it is also with the new D 408 F .
Do your bikes sing also when not driving straight on ? ( i do not hear it when i open the throttle )
