Rough Ride
« on: May 07, 2009, 07:01:28 AM »

I love most everything about my new ride except how much vibration I get out of it. Above 50 MPH it seems like I am getting way too much vibration. The tech at the shop said he thinks it is because the lower profile tires. I am running 40 psi in the rear shock as recommended. I am running 40psi in the back tire and 36 in the front. It feels like the vibes are coming more from the front than back but I am not sure. My 08' RG rode a lot smoother. I am wondering if the suspension is that much stiffer. Has anybody else noticed this? Thanks, T.

I found it : http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=36453.0
Mine is ok , let it check by the dealer yesterday .
The Klonk is caused by the swimming-brakes-mounting , and it is ok so .

No, it is not a wobble it is just a vibration or a real rough ride. I really don't notice it too bad until above 50 that's why I think it is a balance problem. I thought maybe they all rode rougher than the standard touring bikes. Vibration is a subjective thing but it is definitely noticeable after just coming from an 08' RG. T.

Vibration and rough ride are two different things.  If you have a vibration, especially from the front end at higher speeds, take a good close look at the tire tread (run your hand over the tread in both directions and note any uneven areas).  Several/many folks have reported tire cupping at relatively low mileage.  Also need to have the tire and wheel runout checked as well as the balance.  And tell the "tech" that low profile tires don't cause vibration any more than standard profile tires.  He needs to do his job and diagnose the problem, not give flip answers to legitimate concerns.

None on the front and didn't check the back. Maybe one of the reasons these things cost so much is because they have a special machine that manufactures the tires to match the wheel perfectly without using weights to screw up the custom look ;). What do you think the odds are of getting the dealer to check the tires for proper balance? The bike only has 400 miles on it and I noticed the vibration from the first time I rode it. T.

It sounds to me like a balance problem or wheel run out problem or out of round tire.

My bike rides very smooth on smooth roads at any speed from 5 mph up to 100 mph.

You may feel more roughness in the road, do to less side wall flex.  However that would not be speed related, or a vibration.

The 18" wheels and lower profile D407 tires will definitely ride a little stiffer. On my FLHX The D402's on a 16" wheel rode very different; and as for the vibration; that is hard to tell- it might be a balance issue. If you are feeling a all the lines in the road- and minor dips & bumps in your seat; welcome to the club; the SERG rides a little stiff, its got 12" inch shocks instead of 13" compared to the NON-CVO models, or the SEUC's- so there is less travel.

Try 30 or 35 psi in your shocks- and 38lbs in your tire- solo; (keep tire max psi (42) w/ passenger)

Maybe the tire has a production fault or is not perfectly mounted , check the perfect fitting of the tire in the rim .
Maybe the fairing is loosely , check the mounting , especially those at the turn signals .
maybe the " track " or tie rod is not perfect adjusted or loosely .

I definitely found no weights at the wheels , how do they do it when you need a new tire ?
I guess that you`re right , and this is for the clean custom look . Wow again , what a hell machine , I love it .

Any chance you've got another SERG locally, so you could take it for a spin and compare the ride to see if it is just yours?
