Front end "wiggle"
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:57:14 PM »

When I pulled the Ultra into the garage the other night, I felt the handle bars wiggle when the front tire hit the edge of the concrete floor. When I got it pulled inside, I shook the handlebars left to right and felt the same wiggle. When I shook it back and forth harder, the worse the wiggle was. This is my first touring bike so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I can tell you that I've never felt this on any of my other bikes. When I started looking around, it looked like the fairing was a little off center so my first thought was a loose loose nut on the triple tree. I had a friend straddle the front wheel while I tried to twist the bars but it wouldn't move at all. I tried a quick jerk and almost knocked him on the ground. I'd say the triple tree is plenty tight.

Is this wiggle due to something mounted in rubber on the front end or do I have a problem ?

Thanks in advance for any comments...

Don't forget the rubber mounts for the handlebars.

The bike only has 1800 miles on it so I'm hoping I don't have a bad bearing already. The tire has 38 lbs. of air but it's not something you'd feel from a low tire. I can make it wiggle while it's parked in the garage. I guess the wiggle feels kinda like stiff jello because it doesn't stop when my hands stop moving. If I shake the handlebars like a minor death wobble (back and forth), I feel the grips bumping my hands after they're still.

The handlebars are mounted in rubber ? Maybe that's what I feel ! Is that done to eliminate vibration in your hands ?

Yes, and yes.  If the feeling bothers you too much, you can replace the rubber bushings with urethane parts that have less "give".
