ABS Saved my ASS
« on: May 07, 2009, 10:39:29 PM »

I was travekling about 30 MPH coming up on a light. Guy in front of me an an F150 pulls onto the shoulder as I pull into the left hand turn lane. All of a sudden he guns it and makes a u turn right in front of me. I locked the brakes up (well ABS kicked in). The front wheel went slightly left then straight. I finally came top a stop and the guy came 4 inches from hanging his back bumper on my front wheel. I sat there for a minute then madfe a u turn myself and chased him down the freeway at about 100. Got plate numbers then pulled off the freeway. I will send him a letter or pay him a visit. The worst thing about this was I just installed my Fulsac baffles and was all sweaty so I didn't put my helmet on before I left. Could have been a bad deal. Oh by the way the 2" baffles are perfect. Don't give up.  He thinks he got away with it.

Glad you didn't get hurt.  After the adrenaline rush settles down and you gather your wits, don't waste time sending him a letter or even worse paying him a visit.  There is absolutely nothing to be gained from it and much that can be lost.  That can only escalate and possibly turn out bad for you.  If you feel as though you just can't get over it and chalk it up to lessons learned from stupid cage drivers, then file a report with your local law enforcement department or perhaps the state boys.  There is perhaps a lesson to be learned from this experience.  If someone pulls over to either side of the road, be prepared for exactly that type of thing happening.  I have learned to expect the unexpected and have my mental radar in full swing when I'm out riding.  We have a fairly large population of eastern european immigrants in this area and they still drive like they did back home.  Total disregard for traffic laws and even less for motorcyclists.  Makes for some exciting days.

Thanks man. You are exactly right. This could escalate into something I may regret later. I have seen many people do u turns and I should have known. However I was looking at him when he started the turn and immediately shut the bike down. Had I not been looking at him I would have hit him. They would have said " he normally wore his helmet but for some reason he didn't put it on. He was only going up the street and coming right back". Many times the difference between almost wrecking and a fatal accident may be inches or fractions of a second. Be careful out there. T.
