Got rid of 80% of top end noise on 110
« on: May 09, 2009, 04:40:27 PM »

The top end rattle from the 110 annoyed the h*ll out of me --------but the day before yesterday I did an oil change and used Redline 20/60 ---wow----noise is reduced to a minimum and I am a happy camper. Not the easiest product to find (I ordered it on-line out of P.A. and got it with-in 48 hrs) but well worth the inconvenience (IMHO).

Here is the website - Redline Oil. Many of us use their lubricants in our motors, primary (Redline MTL), and trannies (Redline Heavyduty Shockproof).

Are you sure it wasn't 20W50?  I checked out their website and couldn't find the 60?

I've had nothing but good experiences with Redline lubricants.  20W/50 in the winter, 20W/60 in the summer, and Heavy Shockproof in the trans.  :2vrolijk_21:

Available on Amazon.com  $8.87/qt by the case, to your doorbell.

Well, I guess seeing is believing!  Thanks guys.  I've already bought Mobil 1 V Twin for the next change, but afterwards I think I'll go with the Redline if the shipping is not too prohibitive up here.

I have 6-8 qts of the 20W60 that I am not using.  I use Redline 20W50..

When I spoke with Redline a few years ago, they did not recommend 20W60 for TC's or Evo's, just the older style engines.  20W60 is so thick, it barely pours out of the bottle.   Probably takes a while to get circulated.  FWIW..

Good to know.  In the past I change to the 20W60 before riding to Sturgis from CA.  Maybe I should rethink that.

Some-one in the know please correct me if I am wrong ------ but I have always been under the impression (or delusion) that a 20/30 or a 20/60 or whatever is 20 weight when cold and as it is subjected to more heat it rises to the second weight (30 -----50 ---60).

This discussion brings up some interesting view points and recently I was talking to my "indie" and he mentioned that at temps over 60 F that the manual recommends straight 50 weight oil, and temps above 80 F it recommended straight 60 weight oil (which have been verified in owners manual and service manual). However both of these weights aren't recommended for cold starting (temps below 50 F). I personally don't change my oil for the seasons/temps, but by mileage (5K). Since I live in an area that temps can vary that would make you think you had four seasons in one week I choose to stick with 20w/50w oil. For those that might change there oil by season (temps) then they may want to go by the recommendations the manual suggests. :nixweiss: However for me I'll just stick w/the multi-viscosity (20w/50w) of a good lubricant (Amsoil) and change it at recommended mileage (5k).

Well that's what I thought, which is why I do a 20W60 pre-Sturgis for the hot runs through the desert.

Here is the site I use to get redline and you can get a (package deal) if you're filling all three holes at the same time.

P.S.  If you're not using Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof or (their new motorcycle version) in your transmission, you are in need of a kick in the butt. :)

Great link -- thanks!

Here's what they say about the 20W60:

Specifically blended for air-cooled V-Twin engines with traditionally wide clearances like Knucklehead, Shovelhead, and Panhead engines. Also compatible with V-twins operated in hot climates.

I'm glad to read the last part about hot climates.  I just feel better on the Sturgis run with something a little heavier in there.  It's torturous on some of those stretches -- like badlands for example.  I've never heard any cold noise to indicate a lack of lubrication.  And, I usually change it just before and after Sturgis.

Also, glad to read they have a V-Twin trans specific version of the shockproof.

Modern SAE grading methods are a little different from those used when I was a youngster, in that the 20W part of the number is no longer just the viscosity measured at 0°F (-17.8°C).  Now the SAE standard calls for using a cold cranking simulator to measure the ability of the oil to be pumped at low temps.  Each different xW number represents the ability to flow sufficiently at different temperatures to allow an engine oil pump to flow oil through the engine.  The chart I'm attaching shows the different xW ratings and the temps at which they apply (as well as the actual viscosity ranges for the second number of the rating, measured at 212°F (100°C).

In the instance of a 20W50 versus a 20W60, both meet the flow requirements at -15°C (5°F) to be rated a 20W so they should both be fine for all but the most hardcore cold weather riders.
