I should know better and I usually park in the most distant parking spot I can find.  Car or Motorcycle.
Today I went to my daughters soccer game and parked my HD in the middle of a spot front row because there are only a handful of cars in the lot.
Game is over and I am walking to my cycle as I watch a dude pull up on his 883 and stop, back up and position his bike between mine and the minivan.
His handlebars are about 3" from my tourpak and about 3" from the minivans passenger door.
I walk up and he says " hey I hope you don't mind me parking here "
I looked at him and said "YEA I DO!"
I got on my bike and was careful to not stand it up off the kickstand as I would have hit his handlebar.  Pulled out and drove back around to tell him there are about 200 open spots in the parking lot, I did not think it was a bright idea to park that close.
Just glad he didn't hit the bike or the minivan passenger did not leave before and open there door and domino both bikes.  I got lucky with timing.  I could be in jail right now and that Idiot could be in the hospital.
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE IDIOT PROOF THE WORLD!
I should know better and park as far away as possible.  Today I got lucky.  Maybe I am the Idiot, after all I know better.

if you're that particular on how close folks park to your bike, stay away from rallies , poker rides or any gathering of motorcycles cause that's the way it's done at those events.
now on the other hand i can see your point about parking lots with no other bikes around. the guy obviously figured because your bike wasn't taking up the whole spot he had the go ahead to squeeze his ride in next to yours.

I, like you, always park further away from other vehicles, especially in my car to avoid the parking lot dings.  Now ladies, don't take offense, but I've been sitting in my car before when women pulled up to park, opened their door right into the side of my door or fender and didn't even blink an eye, much less offer an apology.  It's in their genes!  But, having said that motorcycles are like flies to honey.  For some reason if you park your bike in a lot or in front of a building other riders always park their bikes in the same place.  I've done it as well, but I always try to leave a reasonable bit of room.  It's a biker thing!  Drive by a bar or restaraunt and check out the bikes in front.  Sounds as though this fellow was trying a little too hard to "fit in".  Sorry, couldn't resist it!

I had a off-duty male Sheriff do it to my very nice, clean 1980 Monte Carlo.  It took a week to get in contact w/him to take care of it.  I even had to go to the Sheriff station to get in contact w/ him since he wasn't returning the calls.

My 09 had less then a thousand miles on it. As I am riding up a parking lot I see a guy stumbling toward the area near were I am going but didn't really pay to much attention. I park in the middle of the parking spot, come out of the store and the same guy is now in his car backing up out of a parking space into (very near) my bike, I yell (yes, yelled at the top of my voice) "MF your about to hit my bike" ( he would have if I didn't yell). The guy stops and says " I wasn't going to hit your bike" (BS). He would of, then says "just because you are a biker, it's doesn't give you the right to be an azzhole". I told him "just because you are drunk, it doesn't give you the right to hit my bike". I don't have to tell you that if I didn't say anything, he would of hit the bike. I live with people cutting me off on the frwy all the time (mostly on the phone) but when you park and people are so disrespectful of something you have worked so hard to get, I go crazy !!!

We don't have that problem in South Carolina!
Everyone has respect for the other persons property and goes out of their way to not crowd you in or scratch your vehicle!
I've got to stop drinking early in the evening, make me hallucinate.

       Its realy not funny but the way you tell the story got me laughing.
