not a hypocondriac
« on: May 11, 2009, 10:32:53 AM »

My '07 CVO SE ultra engine finally let go...fortunately for me it was 12 days after I traded it in.  Now the dealer has found the problem, after having the bike all winter and not finding it...the crank assembly went and took out the oil pump.  So I guess running around for about a year with only 1/2 the oil pressure I should have had was actually a real problem.  This, of course is contrary to what the dealer, the service rep for our area, and the motor company tried to tell me.

At least its not a pain to you any more..... I think if there was better communication between the Motor Company and Dealership most of these problems would be solved by now. There is a problem not a performance upgrade. Big differences not to their pocket but to ours. That part truly disappoints me with Harley Davidson.

Somehow this story makes me smile.   Did you tell them that this sort of thing is "normal"?   I would have.

Too bad the dealer and his service rep don't read this forum, they would have known what the problem was a long time ago without waiting for a complete failure.  One of my pet peeves with H-D and many of it's dealers is a lack of diagnostic ability and/or the will to dig a little to solve the problems.  Much easier to just call everything normal until it fails completely, then just replace the failed part.  Of course, in many cases the causual part isn't the part that blows up so even replacing the failed part doesn't fix the problem.  Gotta love the incompetent jerks, right?  Oh yeah, and the fact that they expect you to keep riding a ticking time bomb while waiting for the complete failure that will finally lead them to the problem really fries my azz.  Nothing like locking up an engine at 70 mph on the highway and losing a few pounds of skin in the resulting slide.

This same anomaly in Factory Service occurs in the automobile industry as well.  When I was in the business, I was amazed that within GM, Cadillac, Olds, and Buick would pay for road test time (diagmostic)  under warranty, but Pontiac and Chevy would not.
this leads to fix what's obviously broken only.

I hear that a lot in my travels. Seems there is a general drift to that way of thinking: "You have a new bike with a 2-year warranty, just ride it till it blows up" is what feedback I hear from our local service dept.
My buddies '09 is making bottom end noise.........the dealer is not concerned, why should they be? THEY and not the one sitting on the seat at 80mph!
Does your service dept say: "Hell, they ALL do that!" How many times do you hear that??
I am very cautious to new and unusual sounds from MY bikes, and take action when something doesn't "sound" right.

Glad to hear that the timing worked out for one of us for a change. I found out my '07 had a bad crank just two months outside the factory w.....ty and they won't stand behind it. And they had replaced the original crank after the first year.  I guess the factory rep thinks it's normal for a 2 year old bike to use up a crankshaft every year because he denied my claim. I'm trying to decide whether to take my claim to the next level within Harley, or just go with one of those class action suits I've been hearing about...  :soapbox:

Another of my favorite things about H-D.  They know damned well they had a bad run of cranks (and for all I know probably still don't have the situation totally fixed), yet they jerk customers around, change the run-out specs to ridiculous amounts, use the "problem, we don't know about any problem" response, and in general just jerk the customers off while hoping they will just give up and go away.  Oh yeah, and my favorite is blaming the customer for the problem with crap like "you're lugging the engine" or "your running it too hard".  KMA.  If they don't want you riding it at less than 3000 rpm, why did they install a cam that pulls down low and dies up top?  And if you have to baby the engine to make it survive, please explain again why it is I should spend $35k and up for this POS.

I guess I may be stupid, but other than the engine problems my BSR and I LOVE this bike. If we weren't having to spend so much money to fix this one we would like to buy a new CVO Ultra Classic. I guess the MoCo doesn't realize they're being penny wise and pound foolish. If they would lay out a couple thousand to fix my bike I could spend another $35k to buy a "spare" bike... Of course it's starting to look like a spare bike may be a necessity if I want to actually get to ride!  ???
