Ultra Driving lights
« on: May 18, 2009, 09:24:31 PM »

I have narrowed the search to 2 options
PIAA 1000x or Motolites with 55w bulbs
The motolites look the easiest to fit but how do they realy perform installed that low to the ground.
The reviews say every one is happy with them because they are easily seen buy other drivers.
That is not my priority I need to see kangaroos, wombats and stray sheep etc on country roads at speed so a range of 350 to 400 meters plus is what i am looking for.
The standard light low beam set up is good for low speed and I can see off into the bush enough, but high beam goes back to a single beam.
I am aware of options for the passing lights but do not want to loose the low beam spread
Has anyone fitted the PIAA's up top anywhere
Help much appreciated

One more option (if it was me anyway)
http://76.162.149.2/gpage28.html
I'd go with his HID head lamp also...I have the HID dual bulb convertion and its like the difference between nite and day! Might not need the driving lights then.
We don't have any kangaroos or wombats here in New Jersey. Just deer and crazy Jersey drivers...Don't know which is worse????

Do you use the lamps all of the time?

the passing lamps are on low beam all the time and have a reasonable spread out to the side.
Hi beam they are off and I want driving lights to assist the main light.

I have tons of lights on my front,
Moto lights
Hid headlights and
high intensity lamps in driving lamps.
I am obnoxious coming down the road like the sun. (I can still overrun the lights though)
The moto lights are the best lights so far.
The hid's give me distance but not real broad lighting.
Moto lights are bright as hell and like having floods out there (not good with fog)
driving lights play a fairly insignificant role though.

If I only had to chose one, it would be moto lights and of course the most expensive option ($700.00+)

HID LIGHTS - Takes 10 minutes to install - Literally Night and Day Difference.

Contact Jim (hd-dude) He'll get you fixed up.

Thanks
I have decided to start with the HID main
After i got back up of the floor at the dealers I ordered the kit
$AUD890 = about $US676.( talk about being screwed)
Before you say I could have ordered in US our lights are different,  (low beam is down to the left side) opposite to US
I do not want to know how much they are there
The motolites are a little better priced, have seen the basic chrome set at a touch over $Au500 and will consider them latter.

There is a 5 minute conversion to keep your passing lamps on with the high beam as well.

That is the cost of the HID conversion in the 09 parts cataloge.
Part #68094-06 (I think) this # is from 06 cat but same as 09

the difference between most of the hid kits and hd's hid kit is that on the hd unit the low beam hid bulb stays on ALL the time. when the high beam goes on the spots go out but the low beam stays on.

i have the dual bulb kit - its the exact same reflector and operation, just not the hid low beam, it uses a halogen low beam instead - and its loads loads better at night than any of the single bulb units ive seen or used between about 1978 and now. the low beam floods the ditches and lights up the eyes of all the cats, possums, coons, deer, dogs, pigs, cows, etc that can be found wondering around at night. and the high beam goes straight down the road almost as far as on my car.

ive always wanted better lights on the bike than the car - the old generator 6 volt things barely lit up the center line.... the dual bulb reflector unit does the job - next up will be hid for the low beam......

I didn't mean for you to use the HD kit. Plenty of aftermarket kits out there. The link I put in earlier as 1 option. I've heard good things about his kit for the headlight. Hi-lo beam from one bulb.

I realised that but over hear there is not many options. I have bought quite a bit of stuff over the years from the US but our lights have to switch to the left when on low beam which is opposite to you, so most or all of what is available over there is not good for our market here.
another example is electrical stuff US 110 volts  Aus 240 volts
Thanks again for the ideas i think i am off in the right direction

I'm puzzled by that John!  What kit did you order?  The HD dual bulb with HID dip?  There is no RHD version of that!  If that's what you ordered, it will still be the US one (Which, like most US lights, doesn't dip to the right, but straight down).

I face the same problem in the UK, but had the HD dual bulb with HID dip fitted to my last two bikes.  The dip straight down is fine, and nobody even notices!  The only problem is that it has no bulb for the sidelight, but again, as dip is always on, nobody ever notices that it's missing....

You are correct
I questioned the dealer about advice given,  he checked and got back to me with the correct info.(well almost. told dips to right not straight down)
I will be happy with straight down.
I hope it puts out a good beam for the $$ to be paid.

Thanks for info
