I installed new Jims 131 to my FLHTCUSE2 with their 58 mm throttle body and Daytona Twintec autotune. It works fine but I hate the metallic noise coming from the engine. The engine was complete so I didn't check the pushrods in the beginning. After 200 miles I thought the noice was louder and I changed other oil, from mineral 20W50 to Redline 20W60. It was still close to 0 degrees celcius (32 F) so I thought synthetic oil might be better and nothing else was available at that time. I checked pushrods and adjusted them 2,5 turns like according Jims instructions. Then I found other source in internet that Jims lifters need 3 turns if there are SE push rods (which I don't know). I readjusted to 3 turns and maybe it became better. After that I still increased 0,5 turns so now they are 3,5 turns. Still there is too much noise. I cannot say is it from the bottom end, lifters or cylinder heads. I also changed H-D heavy duty compensator. The engine is noisy lready at idle but it starts to be a lot louder at 3000 rpm. When I close the throttle the noise goes away. Is it a feature in Jims or is there something wrong? It is not that loud that it prevents me riding but it is annoying. I believe cams are SE 264? Would other milder cams improve the situation? Or are there other lifters that would be better? The original 110 engine was silent. I remember my old bike had 124" S&S and that was also making noise but about half of this Jims.

What about warranty?
I would pull the pushrods and the lifters and do an inspection of those.

Uh Oh, Hope you get this cleared up as just ordered one myself. I will be watching this. You must have had the only silent 110, all the ones I have heard are plenty noisy including mine after warmed up.

I installed a Jim's 131 in my 08 Ultra Anniversary last summer. I now have approximately 4K miles. The motor was quite as a kitten then and still is. I think you need to take this up with Jim's. Did you install the motor or a dealer. I believe if dealer installed Jim's honors the warranty through the authorized dealership. I've also heard chatter that the 131 runs hot. I have not experienced this either. A couple weekends ago i rode down the Bay area and got stuck in stop in go traffic in 98 degree weather, motor did not exceed 248 degrees and normal temps are around 232.

We changed the lifter tappets to V-Thunder (manufactured by Competition Cams). My pushrods were 24 threads/inch. V-Thunder instructions were for street bikes 1,5 turns, for race bikes 7 flats front and 4 flats rear. I wonder why as I would have thought other way round if rear cylinder gets hotter and aluminum heat expansion is 3x of steel. However, my tech said he has the best results with only 1 full turn and so we did. In the beginning it was better but still making some noise. Now after 50 miles and several high rpm accelerations it is very good so the problem and cure were the lifters. Standard high lift cam H-D noise level like my old bike's S&S engine. Also my friend asked yesterday from 50 feet distance what have I done because it was not making that terrible noise anymore.

Glad to hear you found the problem.  I've heard good things about those lifters.

Just installed the 131 in my bike. Made a phone call to a dealer to ask some questions first thing out of the guys mouth was replace the lifters with HD ones 18538-99b which I did. He said the Jim's were just to noisy and still not good. Very happy so far.

Just installed Jim's 131 in my 2009 springer cvo. After having 500 mile oil change made it 1/2 mile from dealership and I broke rocker. Should I replace with hd rockers or go with Jim's rockers?

Get Jim's to replace, why spend money on a new motor.

Sorry to hear you installed a Jim's 131 and I'm not surprised you are having problems at 500 mile..   UnbLanced is correct..  Why should you spend even a dime on a motor you spent a ton on... Call Jim's and have them deal with it. Good luck with that motor, not many of us have.

An after thought,

Only in an effort to save you from being down a long time during prime riding season, if your unable to get them from Jim's in a timely fashion, so you dont blow a lot of riding time I would consider if you have the funds to purchase a set of S&S roller rockers and a set of their lifters while your in there and change them out.   This should help quiet the motor some too the lifters I mean and they won't bleed down as fast either

I would still insist that Jim's replace theirs.

Sorry to hear you installed a Jim's 131 and I'm not surprised you are having problems at 500 mile..

I am very happy with the reliability and performance of my 131. I’ve been running a Jims 131 with a 58mm TB, in a 2009 FLHX for 3 years. I swapped the original engine out for the 131 at 255 miles. The machine now has 39,641 miles.

This engine delivers around 40 mpg on the slab, and last July 3 on a 55 mph two-lane, with the wind at my back, I saw 48 mpg on a 170 mile leg; although that was the first time that I've seen anything like that!

I replaced the original (noisy) lifters in the Jims engine with OE lifters at 550 miles on the odometer (295 on the lifters), then as a precaution, every 10 to 13 thousand miles thereafter. Other than regular scheduled maintenance, lifters and tires, the only issue with the powertrain and chassis was a weeping rear rocker box, at 19,991 miles.

After this year the plan is to slip the 131 into a new machine and run it for another season.
