First service - what oil?
« on: May 20, 2009, 12:05:32 PM »

Now that the weather is better in Ma and i am back from my business trip i have been able to get some mileage on her. I am looking at doing the first service myself as i did on my prior street glide.

What oil did you use in the 3 holes? Bike came with syn3, is mobil 1 as good or better? how about redline or amsoil? and what weight?

Try the "search" function up top.  It's very handy.  Tell it to search by "oil" in thread titles only.  You'll find about 77,345,975,037,982,101.3 old threads on what oil to use.

Oh yeah, Mobil 1 and Amsoil are concensus choices for the motor.  Redline heavy shockproof seems to be the most common choice for the tranny.  Redline MTL might hold a closer lead for the primary.  But it's all in search ::) .

Here is my condensed version of those 8 gazillion posts in those threads:

Motor Oil >  Amsoil 20W50, Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50

Trans Oil >  Redline Shockproof Heavy (or their new "V-Twin" version, same stuff, higher price), Bel-Ray, Spectro

Primary Oil > Most anything that's compatible with a wet clutch.  Automotive automatic trans fluid, Redline MTL, Harley's Formula+, the Mobil 1 or Amsoil motor oils, etc.

The consensus is that the SYN3 is an inferior product (I didn't say that was a fact, just that it was the consensus opinion).  Also, the idea of one fluid for all three holes may be a maintenance simplifier but so far Harley hasn't come up with gearboxes and primaries that seem to enjoy being fed motor oil.  A much better idea, at least for now, seems to be different lubes for each hole.

Yep, what grc said.  That about sums it up.  And who would've thought we ever would've ended the oil debates!

Let me also add that in an another thread http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=36740.0 it was discussed that using Redline's 20W60 will help you reduce the top end noise on a 110.

Let me report that this works as reported. My top end noise is dramatically reduced and in some cases not audible at all. :2vrolijk_21:

This is only advisable in warm weather situations as the heavier viscosity is not recommended in cold weather. :nixweiss:
