Cost/Value of Reworking Stock SEEG Heads?
« on: November 08, 2005, 07:50:41 PM »

I got a call the other day from a guy I know who is a Service Manager for Roeder Harley Davidson in Monroeville. He mentioned a few of their upcoming "Winter Performance Special's" knowing I may be a candidate to take things to the next level (ie, heads, pistons, cams, etc). I know they have a very good reputation and they share some secret's back and forth with Tilley's as to how to get the most out MOCO products when it comes to performance.

One thing he strongly suggested was to have them totally rework my stock heads which they do inhouse for a price of $1200.00. They swear the results are worth the cost as they feel the heads are the biggest key to unleashing horsepower.

Does this sound like money well spent to you guys out there with expertise on this subject?

I would not pay them that kind of money. I do have someone that will do it and I know you will get a bang for you buck!!!!! At a lesser price I'm sure.

To me $1200.00 seems a bit high especially when there are other quality people out there doing it for a lot less.

Here are some of the better head guys out there.

I thought the price was excessive and I told him that when he called. But he kept on about the quality of the work and free winter storage they offer and pay when you pick it up in the spring etc, etc, etc.

And the $1200 was just for the headwork itself. It did not include the labor to take them off and put them back on.........hmmmm some winter special......

That is what I said when I got the bill.

I did it, love it and highly recommend it if you have a six speed.  You actually get new heads, pistons and cams (257s)  The heads do not say "Screaming Eagle 103", instead "Screaming Eagle"

It really wakes the bike up.

If the $1200 included removal, installation, and pistons, then I might consider it a "special".  $1200 just for reworking the heads is way excessive compared to just about anyone out there doing head work.  If it was me, I'd look for a package deal that included pistons, heads, and cams.  Do it all at once and save the redundant labor charges.

Head work on CVO 103 heads ( not just a port / polish/ and decking to raise compression) to make them really work (saving the 103 SE script for originality) involves pulling them apart, welding up the combustion chamber and ports and starting over to get a nice "bath tub" chamber with a decent squish area. Lots of machining and port reshaping involved and TIME.  If this is whats being offered for $1200.00 it's not really out of line. Didnt someone on this forum send his bike to SBC in Arizona and have the heads welded up and reshaped along with 585 cams???  wonder what the cost was at SBC ??  anyone ??
I can't remember sh*t anymore.

syclone,

As memory serves me SBC charges 999.00 for his heads as a standard price for the 103 SE heads to be welded up and set at 10.0 to 1 using stock pistons and a 55g cam and it produces i believe he said 115 / 112 some slightly more.  He has a web site I just dont have it handy atm to link it.

Thanks...wish I could find the forum member who had it done. I knew it was more than the standard port/polish/deck job. These stock heads really are some poor pieces..The combustion chamber shape in and of itself is the problem..compression is easy..squish area is not.

syclone,

Branch does the same thing when you have them work your heads - they weld up part of the combustion chamber and ports and then machine everything to their design.  Their prices were less than $1k last time I checked.

www.motorcyclemachine.com and the $999 is for the "Vortec" heads. Welded up chambers, twin swirl pattern in the intake, valves, springs, etc. Btw - if your wondering about the "Vortec" name, yes, the same guy who worked on the design for the Big automaker, helped with this design as well.
