Put on the Sundowner
« on: May 27, 2009, 11:55:14 AM »

I put on a Sundowner seat yesterday. I think this is going to be a great touring seat. It seems to make the bike ride smoother and should be more comfy for the long haul. It does make me sit up an inch or so higher but the trade off should be worth it. Only problem is I can't use my stock sissy bar with it. T.

I took it on a 150 mile trip today. Trip started off OK but after about 50 miles my legs were hurting where they connect to my butt. The same place as the stocker. The Sundowner does make the bike ride smoother but I still get much discomfort. Does the Sundowner require some break in time? T.

You'll need to break in any new seat, about 1000 miles should do it.  I've heard that Corbin seats never break-in, they're hard forever.  I've got no experience with this though.

Harley foam is not rigid, it has NO break in time, whatever that is. What you see is what you get. IF foam were to "break-in" as Corbin says then it is failing. I made hi quality foam chemicals and the actual foam for 12 years. Corbin foam is old tech that does "break-in", read breakdown and compress, once this happens it is pretty much solid. Good foam does not do this, how many Cadillac/Lincoln/Lexus seats did you ever see "break-in". That is just crap, good foam holds it shape and compressability for the expected lifespan of the product. If you bought a new Lexus and after a 1000 miles the drivers seat took to looking like your ass you would be back demanding warranty so fast your head spun. If a seat sits good when you buy it, it should sit the same way 12000 miles later, or be replaced at the manufacturers expense.

I fixed the problem. I put an Airhawk on it. I think that is the best it will get. T.

Ain't AirHawke a great product? Wife rides on whatever seat I put on without complaints as long as she has her Airhawke.

This last weekend we rode about 100 miles with the stock seat. She said it was fine with the Airhawk, I still thought it sucked. So it looks like we will be going on the trip with the Sundowner and the Airhawks. She will probably outlast me in the saddle. Boy that statement sounded about right on. Must be an age thing. HaHa. The sissy bar goes on but it doesn't stick up high enough above the Sundowner to be of much use. T.

Thanks for the detail DW, it's good to hear it from someone that has industry experience instead of just opinions for once.   ;D

Big T,

You should have gone with the "Tall Boy" seat.  It only raises you an inch over the stock SERG seat but it puts you two inches or so back from the sundowner...you get to stretch out.  It also has as much padding as the sundowner has for the BSR so they'll be happy.

We just got back from a 2K trip to Key West and did 13 hours in the saddle the last day.  We were tired and had a minor case of "monkey-butt" but it was very minor considering.

At my height and inseam the Sundowner put me a little further forward which is a good thing, elbows are bent slightly, Very comfortable. I did take the first one I bought (Plain smooth one) back and trade for the FLHX one that has the pattern in it. Local upolstery guy is trying to find duplicate material that came in stock seat/backrest and will change it out so it matches. Comfort wise I am very happy.

I'm 6' with a 34" you know what.  The sundowner puts my nuts on the tank.  I gotta stretch out.  I had the sundowner on my Road King.  While it was very comfy,  I was too far forward.
