Dad

Been a hectic few days.  Think we're planed for now.  Was a good day.

Long story short.  Dad hasn't been doing well.  Recently was asked to move him out of his former assisted living community in LaGrange, GA, because they "could not properly care for him."  Placed him in a much better place, near my younger brother, that can properly care for seniors with advanced Parkinson's Disease and Dementia.  Spent last Sunday there, and just returned from another visit today.........his 73rd birthday.  Here's a few pics.  Apologies upfront for lack of quality..........phone camera.

Renea and Dad.

Dad enjoyed his favorite dish:  Crawfish Etouffee.  Asked for Bananas Foster, but the chef couldn't do it............starting to wonder what part of LA he's from.   ;D

It's a 200 mile trip to visit him.  Worth every mile and all nine hours......each trip.

We are all put here on this earth for a finite term.

Enjoy and Cherish EVERY single moment with your parents.

We're so friggin' tired.  It's been a hectic few days.

I'm glad to hear you were able to move him and that he's in a better location now. 

My mom was born in '14 and my dad in '13.  My mom passed in '94 and my dad just last October 11 days short of his 95th birthday.

For the past 7 years I've not lived within driving range of the old homestead area.  When I lived in Michigan, it was only 45 minutes to see them and later to just see dad.  I should have, could have, done a LOT more to be with him, but life if too busy sometimes and other things get in the way.

What you're doing with your brother close and you taking the long trip to see him, makes me a bit ashamed of myself for not doing more when I could have.  So take as much time as you can and enjoy what's left of the visits you can work in.

Good luck for your dad and drive safely on your visits.

What Dan said above is true, spend as much time as possible with "Dad".

Keep us informed as to his well being.

Good to see "Dad" taken care of.

You are right it's worth the trip every time.  You are also right, we much charrish every minute we have with them.

My parents are in their early 70's.  It is 589 miles from my drive to theirs.  I have to work real hard to see them four or five times a year.  Every Fall, since 81 when I moved out of MI, I go up to spend 10 days Salmon fishing with Dad on Lake MI.  I usually make it up three or four other times for three or four days.

glad your getting some time...

I wish I had more time with my dad at the end, got 4 days with him in person before he rode off - was in Iraq for the entire year he was battling his cancer.

Dad and I had our differences over the years, but man I miss the hell out of him.

Man what can I say, such passionate words of wisdom prior to my post. It's awful easy to find excuses to avoid the long trip, I'm sure your Dad appreciates the fact that you are a man of action. A bond between a father and son cannot be described with words, at least I can't. Its more important than that. Hope others can learn from your situation, when you can't be there physically their is always prayer.

Henry, great thread.  It's tough seeing our parents abilities decrease.  I've asked my Dad to do so much with me over the last 10 or so years and he just finds a reason to say no.  He's 76 and not in good health but has his faculties.  My brothers and I find it frustrating since that's the attitude we had growing up.  We've all gone the other extreme and find reasons to say yes.

Enjoy your visits with your Dad while you can. You won't be sorry that you made the effort to be with him.
I to am glad he is moved to a better location that can serve his needs.

Cherish the time with him as much as possible. Its been 3 yrs since my dad has passed, and I still wish I could take just one more ride with him.

Thanks, Folks.  My brother asked that Renea and I remain home this weekend and take a break from these 400 mile round trip day trips.  Well, we did....sorta.  We hopped on the Purple Bike and rode 60 miles to get a greasy hamburger and french fries in Section, AL.  Then we took the long way home via AL 35, Jackson Co. Rd. 21, AL 79/TN 16, US 64, TN 122, and backroads.  Funny how misfortune sometimes occurs conveniently.  Rode into the 15K service on the way home.  Pulled in the driveway, opened the garage, Renea hopped off, put the bike on the Handy lift, shut it down, and oil began pooling below the front engine mount.........................................

Jeeze Henry, just caught this. Hope you worked things out with the RK and I know I don't have to tell ya that you won't regret making that drive. Make it and make it often my friend. You guys are in our thoughts!!!
