Engine stops running at highway speeds
« on: June 06, 2009, 11:11:55 PM »

Started a road trip recently and ran through some bad weather.  Got to the other side and the engine just stopped running.  Long story short, the tank was dry though the gauge showed about a half tank (2007 FXSTSSE).  Filled it and ran fine.   Took off and ran another 10 miles and did the same thing, so trailered it home.

Dealer couldn't find the cause but did replace the fuel gauge.

Anyone run across this with their bike?

Thanks.

Only Bassani pipe, air cleaner upgrade, download map from HD with Race Tuner (with free flowing exhaust).  Bike has run well since brand new.

When you wrote "Bad Weather" did you mean rain? If so, it sounds like something electrical got wet.

That's what I was thinking also.. Power Commanders have been known to have that problem.

Sounds like the ECM needs some dielectric grease as a first step. The dealer had the connector off for the race tuner so knowing the competency of dealers they probably did not put anymore on it. Fill them little pin holes with grease and run a bead across the top of them.
If you put a ziploc bag and put a zippy tie around the end of the Power Commander harness you will eliminate that issue not unless you submerge your bike in water. You also want to drown the Power Commander connector in dielectric grease also as well as any other electrical connectors on the bike when they have been disconnected.

Thanks for the comments and ideas.

One clarification:  the bike was remapped with a HD Race Tuner and does not have a Power Commander.

Yes, I ran through rain both times it quit, so I am thinking electrical myself.  I got it back home and it fired up and ran fine.  Put a water hose on it while it was running and sprayed water around the engine and up under the tank but did not recreate the problem.

Dealer pulled the tank and checked for bad wires, connectors, etc. without success.  Not sure if they checked the dialectric grease at the connectors however.

Any other ideas, or similar problems?

Thanks

Put the dielectric grease on the ECM connector, and always use it when you disconnect and reconnect connectors. I even put it on my battery terminals when I have them off to slow down corrosion.

i had my tri.bar led rear light crap out twice due to rain, after the 3rd was installed under warrenty by the dealer i sealed up the light housing my self, take off the seat n seal up any areas that might let water into the ecm area, block any large holes up with limps of sponge, this should stop any water splashing up there and if there was any it would allow it to drain/dry out.

Thanks for that advice.

I noticed the turn signal housings had moisture in them when the bike quit.  I will work at sealing them up as you suggest, and using dielectric grease on all the connectors.
