REMEMBER WHEN LIFE WAS SIMPLE??
« on: June 07, 2009, 07:57:05 AM »

Yesterday as I was busily going back and forth from our computer to the garage, checking CVOHARLEY posts, downloading software updates from the HD website, burning CD's, getting the NAV CD's, on the bike, off the bike, print-out's and manuals and CD's in hand, my wife innocently asked me, "What are you doing honey?". "Just setting the clock on the radio..." I think we have all gone NUTS.

It's crazy isn't it?  I went through the same thing just to be able to change the day light savings time on mine.

BTW, Nice color SEUC you have there.   :2vrolijk_21:

Remember when the vehicle owners manual wasn't two volumes, the larger of which is for the radio?

I remember when riding a motorcycle was a great way to get away from it all.  Now folks take it "all" with them, as in stereo, gps, wired clothing, Blackberry, cell phone, and enough luggage to last a college kid at least a month or two.

There are times when I really miss those simpler days.  Life seemed much more relaxed, people seemed much less stressed (except for worrying about those Russkies firing a missile at us), and products were simple to set up and operate without an engineering degree.  Now you need an advanced degree with some of this stuff, or at least a really geeky 10 year old neighbor. ;)  Since I don't believe people will give up all their toys, I see a real need to at least standardize how controls work.  Every manufacturer seems to strike out on their own, even on simple stuff like setting clocks or radio presets.  And then we get to the subject of how poor the manuals and instructions seem to be nowdays.  I don't know if that's caused by the dumbing down process in education, or the fact that translating all that stuff from various Asian languages creates confusion. :confused5:

I always thought that the machines/devices that were invented were supposed to ease our burderns in life, not add to them.  The washing machine was sure an improvement over using a washboard and wash tub.  I'm still not sure about the cell phone (nice to have if your ride breaks down but not when someone's rings in the middle of a crowded theatre).

Last year, we were on vacation in Florida and were trying to find the fastest route out of Miami heading towards the Keys.  One of the guys had a portable nav unit with him which gave perfect directions on which road to take....from his home in suburban Buffalo.  (Actually, I used the nav program on my cell phone which worked great...might have to rethink my opinion on the cell...)

Why is it that with digital, high-def cable I receive several hundred channels,  but none of which seem to have any decent programs on them?  It was better to have just three channels; if the shows stank, you went to a movie or read a book.

Whoa - our years are showing.  We used to roll our eyes when our parents talked about the "good old days".   :)

Today when I parked my Copper Top at work another coworker parked his older Sporty next to mine.  Now don't get me wrong I love all the modern comfort and conveniences, but that Sporty sure looks nice and uncluttered.  Perhaps I need to buy another one, but I don't think I can convince the CFO.

Nope, I don't remember any of that.  Not sure if it's cause I'm not that old or...............cause I'm to old to remember. :nixweiss:

Every time I plan a bike I'd build in my cave - and that's fairly often - the parts list always comes out like something Indian Larry would build, simple frame, minimal wiring, boat trailer fenders, carburetted Evo engine.  When I think about riding across the country it's not on a turbine-powered fully-faired luxo-barge, but some kind of marginally-powered, reliable as trees thing that starts on the first kick and doesn't stop until you flip the switch off.  When I think about getting a knock-around ride to work bike it's an old Triumph.  I think I'm getting old.

all of this electric horsechit, cell phones, nav this and that is dumbing down America.    Put a road map in front of any high school kid and he will be totally lost.
