SEUC4 Oil leaks
« on: June 08, 2009, 01:32:51 PM »

Just got back from a 2 week HOG tour of France. 20 bikes on the tour including 4 09 SEUC4's.
3 Silver and Blue 1 Ruby, all with under 4k miles.
The Ruby was stock (no mods). One had Monster Ovals and K/N filter and fuel pack. One had monster Ovals and K/N and Sert. All 3 had Cat's in. Mine had Fullsacs, SE performance filter,Cat removed and TTS mastertune using map supplied by Steve  at fullsac.
All the bikes except mine were running with syn3, mine had Redline Shockproof, Redline MTL and Amisoil 20/50.
The temperature was never more than 28 degrees.
All 3 of the other rider were complaining about excessive heat from the engine and also about very noisy top end noise when hot especially over 3000 revs and also the two riders and pillions with the Monster ovals were complaining about the booming of the ovals giving them headaches especially at sustained cruising speeds
The Ruby was using 1 pint of oil every 1000 miles but no other problems apart from above.
The Silver with the sert developed a cylinder head oil leak.
The Silver with the fuel pak did the same and by the time we got back to the ferry was blowing blue smoke out of the left exhaust.
Mine ran noticably cooler ,noticably quieter and used 1/2 pint of oil on the trip. The sound from the fullsacs was perfect and didnt annoy me or the pillion.
All 3 bikes except mine were running stock suspension at 40 psi, 2 were 2 up one was rider only. I was running AK20's and Bitubos.
All the other 3 riders and pillions were complaining about the suspension bottoming on the bumpier roads and the wallowing on corners.
Mine never bottomed once smoothed the bumps out brilliantly, was noticably quicker on corners and felt very stable at all times.
I will find out in the next week or so what the dealers have had to say about the oil leaks and will update.
I know this is not scientific testing but it is very interesting to compare 4 set ups over the same roads for 2000miles.
Finally I dont think the 09's oil leak problems have been cured by MoCo.

I really enjoy reading the international postings!  If I ever referred to my wife as a pillion she'd probably cold cock me!  I need to get my handy dandy calculator out and figure out how hot 28 degrees celcius is.  Sounds like a fun ride and I'm sure some pretty sights to see.  Glad to see your bike came through unscathed.

28 Celsius = 82.40 Fahrenheit.

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 and add 32 degrees.
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 degrees and divide by 1.8.

Brits are humorous people - and as a German I'm used to people living 50 miles apart not really understanding each other ;D

Excessive heat and "booming" pipes should be expected with those specs and untrained mecs playing around with race fuellers, supertuners and the like - the bikes still run way too lean. It's a shame the MoCo still lets dealers sell equipment they know nothing substancial about.

But cylinder-head problems at 4.000 km should  under no circumstances happen and blue smoke means burnt oil - severe case   :confused5:

The FLHTCUSE4 I bought and - hopefully - will take over somewhen next week by the way after 3 month in the showroom has a nice little oilpit under it ...

Looking forward to your follow-up  ::)

Hi Trot I have just ordered the monster ovals for mine as the standard sound is too quiet for me. I note that yours was the only one with the cat removed do you think that this was the main contributor to the bike running cooler or have you put that down to a combination of the complete set up.
How does yours sound compared to the standard system and the monster oval change.
I would be very interested in your view on this.
Cheers

Sorry about the delay in replying Jim just got back from France again, doing back up rider on a tour this time.
Removing the Cat certainly helps but I think the whole package with the TTS tuner is certainly the answer for me . I tried the monster ovals but took them off after a week as they were giving me and the BSR a headache. (and they are bloody expensive).I have now got Fullsac 2ins inserts and they are superb, the note is just right and the noise level also.

Hi Trot thanks for getting back to me. Can I ask who did the FULLSAC conversion work and what was the cost.  I see from others on this site as well that the Fullsac exhaust changes are receiving good press.

Also you seem to be getting in on some good trips abroad can you advise if these are organised events and if so on how and where you sign up for these as this is on my to do list also.

Thx

Thanks for the great input. I'm having the same problem with my shocks and BSR (wife), is there any help from the MOCO? I also tried the big ovals and took them right back to the dealer after one hour (loud as hell) for a quiet muffler.

The tours I go on are Brettours run by Ron Brett. Use the link in Louis post they are superbly organised on good roads with good Hotels.
The next tour we are going on as a customer is the one to Faker See to European bike week.
The fullsac conversion I did myself and it is really easy.
The problem over here is that the fullsac inserts will not fit in the  09 uk stock exhausts so you have to use the usa stock exhausts and fit the fullsacs.
You can order the usa exhausts from the uk dealer but they are expensive about £700 but I got a new set with end caps and heat shields from ebay.com fer £160 and they were sent over for £60. The Fulsac inserts cost £160 delivered to uk so it ended up much cheaper than monster ovals overall and MUCH better.
The TTs mastertune came from Fullsac as well and IMHO is the best of the tuning programmes. It is very easy to use and the map that Steve from Fulsac sends for your set up is as near as damn it to a first class dyno job.
Taking the cat out is dead easy and is a must if you are doing the job properly and not just to make noise.
Hope this helps Jim.

Hi Trot
thanks again for the advise. My dilema now is that I have the monster ovals on order and they are due in next week so may be a little late to change at this moment in time. I did see another 09 at the dealers show that had ovals fitted and the owner was very pleased with the result but that may have been with the sound and not the overall performance whereas your set up improves both acoustics and performance. I will discuss with the dealer to see what we can do they are normally very helpful. Failing that I will see how the ovals go and wait for my wife to forget how much they cost and then change them out later. Should the bike need remapping or tuning if a set of ovals are fitted do you know?

The Bretours site looks very good I had a look last night after Louis sent me the link so hopefully I will be able to get one sorted soon. Do you have any planned after Faker?

Cheers

Talk soon

as long as you only change the exhaust and leave the OEM A/C on, remapping should not be neccessary - and performance will not improve  8)
