Can't Sell A Harley
« on: June 09, 2009, 07:40:45 PM »

I've pretty much decided since I can't sell my 05 SEEG, just to freshen the motor. I placed it in the Ctrader but no calls in Three weeks. Local shops are dead, I mean totally.

This probably doesn't help.

Quote
UBS Investment Research analyst Robin M. Farley estimated that Harley Davidson's U.S. dealer sales declined 35 percent in April and May, compared to the same period a year earlier.

If such a trend continues, second-quarter earnings could fall more than 30 percent compared to the prior period, Farley wrote. The second quarter is a key period for the company, making up about 35 percent of Harley's overall retail sales, she noted.

Both the local dealers here are offering $1500 in store credit on the purchase of any instock bike. One dealer even has an O/B SERG.

The 2 closest dealers to me both have O/B SERG's and one has $29999 OUT THE DOOR.
IL tax included.
I would love to have one sittin' next to my SILVER/BLUE.
That would make for some good garage art when the wheels were not spinnin'

I've had good luck selling things on CraigList, but then you have to weed out the idiots that call looking for a ridiculous deal.  I tried selling my BMW Z4 everywhere else and got zippo.  I ran the ad in CraigList and sold it the first day for my price.  It still all boils down to that one person reading your ad that wants your bike and has the funds to accomplish it.

I think its a great time to buy, but not to sell. Have seen 05 SEEGs go for less than $17,000 with low miles and lots of extras, dealer even had one for $18,000 with 12,000 miles on it and it was loaded with goodies.I took a bath when I traded my 08 EG in for the 09 SERG O/B but have to say it was worth it to me, at 60 years old it may be my last one.   Doc

I have bookmarked 7 different Harleys on ebay over the last week just to get a feel for pricing.  Not a single one sold.  All had a high bid lower than the reserve price set by the seller.

I checked Ebay when I sold my BMW and it didn't make me feel too optimistic, but then again I sold mine the first day when I ran it on CraigList.  I don't think that everyone is a potential buyer on Ebay for high priced items like cars and bikes.  Although I may look there, I don't think I would ever buy a vehicle via Ebay.  I also don't think the prices items sell for is a good indication of the price you can actually get locally.  I would never buy a vehicle without a personal inspection and test ride.  Obviously, many people don't feel the same way I do, but many people are of the same mindset as me.  Those buyers are still going to buy from items that are advertised for their locality and they are going to want to make a personal inspection of the vehicle in question.  I still think that the majority fall into this category.  That's why I think CraigList is among the better sources for selling quickly, as you are able to search items in a certain locale, and that just makes a lot of people more comfortable.  I don't care where it's advertised, I may look at it and think that's the exact bike that I want, but then I'll try to find one local, instead of taking a chance at buying one from across the country.

I sold a 2002 Harley FLSTC on Craig's List.   The bike was located in Houston, Texas and the buyer came from California.  I tried the Ebay thing but never got close to the asking price.  Some Ebay buyer just like to jack up the price close to the reserve and then quit bidding because they are no serious about the purchase.  Try the Craig's List I think you will be suprised by the results.

I just sold my '06 SE Ultra on eBay a week ago.  Listed one day with the starting bid at my rock bottom dollar and no reserve.  A guy calls the next day and offers me $1,500 over the listing price and it was SOLD.  Guess I was just lucky.  It was exactly what he was looking for with all the extras I added.  I got a fair price and he got a decent deal.  Selling price was $23,500.

I think you are better off on eBay without a reserve.  Just start the bidding at your absolute minimum and let it ride.

This Saturday I bought a '03 SE Road King with only 4,600 miles on eBay for $15,250.  I think I did okay!
