Dual bulb headlamp
« on: June 11, 2009, 03:04:28 PM »

Just got the dual bulb headlamp that I won on ebay, and the little wiring harness it came with seems to ahve a couple of non-MoCo mods to it.  Can anyone tell me how this differs from an un-modified one?

original, looks like the "relay" that keeps the low beam on when the high beam is on is missing

That harness actually looks totally different - maybe because it's from the accessory kit and this one is removed from <member Jimlegg's> an FLHTCUSE4.  It's definitely been modified though, even so....

It has three white, three yellow, and three black coming out from the plug that goes into the original headlamp plug. and your pic seems to show two white, two black and one yellow?

I guess a meaningful comparison would only come from somebody able to look at the OEM one on their CUSE4....

Don't suppose you could do me a small favour, and scan the instruction sheet(s) for me?  ;)

Maybe something to do with the garage door opener that's on US models?  Looking at the wiring diagram in my CUSE2 manual (Don't have a CUSE4 one) doesn't show the three yellow/black/white setup, but it does show two sets - one going to the garage door opener transmitter... That would account for the three cut wires, but not for the other three (2x yellow, 1x white) that have the non-HD joins in them, and the strange lumps (small ferro-magnetic cores??? who knows?) under the heatshrink that does look genuine MoCo.

No relay shown on the wiring diagram for the CUSE 2 in that location - so perhaps a US CUSE4 owner can answer this - does low beam stay on when you switch to high beam?? (hard to see how with no relay...)

OK, have established how this works!  For those who are interested, it's the MoCo saving money on the CUSE!  :)

The three cut wires are, as I suspected, where the garage door opener was connected, so are irrelevant.

The "lumps" you can see in the white and yellow are in fact (credit to JimL here, who told me!) 10A diodes.  What they do is ensure that low beam stays on when you select high beam, achieving the same result as the relay does in the accessory kit, but of course, a pair of diodes are cheaper than a relay, so they save money!  (I wonder why they don't do the accessory kit in the same way???)
