Palm Pre
« on: June 11, 2009, 11:48:42 PM »

The new Palm Pre has come out on the Sprint network. Has anyone bought one yet? I'm an avid Palm user (755p) but have many concerns about the phone, the new operating system, and the network. I've been reading the Palm forum almost as much as CVOHarley. However, I do value my friend's opinion here a little bit more.
TIA,
AJ

AJ,
Don't have one, but a friend at work just got one. I was playing around with it some yesterday and asking him about it. As you mentioned there are a few things that concern me.

1. New OS with limited (at this time) applications written for it.
2. No ability to add a SD card (If memory serves me correctly there is 8GB of internal memory, but don't know how much of that is available for add-on programs).
3. The keyboard is really small and those of us w/fat fingers might find it difficult to use. (To his knowledge there is no on screen keyboard option).

Like us, this guy is a Palm enthusiast and has had several of them. Luckily Alltel/Verizon hasn't started carrying the Pre yet so I can hold out (let others beta test it) for awhile.

I'm in the same boat. While I love my Treo, I starting to push it to it's limits. The web browsing is terrible compared to the newer products.

It's not listed on Verizon's website or on any of the forums that I've read. The iphone looks nice but I don't think it will handle the business applications I need. Reports I've read say the Pre is going after the Blackberry market.

I was unable to find the Pre on the Verizon website either, only Palm they are showing is the Centro. I have been considering the Blackberry Storm, but have been reading mixed reviews about it. :nixweiss: For right now I'm hoping my Treo will last a little while longer.

Not sure what apps you require AJ but I use a multitude on my iPhone and love it. Have you checked the App store or browsed this resource http://forums.macrumors.com/index.php to see if they have what you might need. I have had several "smart" phones but this has been by far the most versatile. Just my .02

I just got the new Blackberry 8900 on T-Mobile's network, and it's the best phone I've had yet. It's got Universal Mobile Access, so you can use any Wifi connection as a cell tower. It doesn't have 3G due to the UMA feature, but the 512 processor is plenty quick, especially on a Wifi connection. The best part is with T-Mobile, unlimited minutes and Blackberry data is only $85. So far...so great!! Just my .02

I KNEW I should have just kept my mouth (fingers) shut! Just this afternoon my Treo has started acting up more. When I go to dial out, it just ends the call. It's definitely phone related. I stopped by the Alltel (now with a Verizion sign outside) to see what my options are. My contract ended 2 days ago so the phone is no longer under warranty (no comments Howie) and they haven't been charging my account for the insurance so I can't go that route.  July 12th is the change over date for Alltel to Verizion. I'm not sure if they are going to honor my rate plan in the future or not so I may be shopping for a new carrier as well. Problem is that 80% of my calls are on the "combined" network so they're free. Oh my woes. And the dealer doesn't have my regulator so I my not have my bike for the weekend. :(

AJ, there's a very specific technical term for your predicament.  You, my friend, are currently f%(&#d.

I've got one bike in Florida & one in the shop. And now my cell phone is acting up. Yeah, that's a predicament.

Here's an objective review of the Pre that says it's going to out perform the BlackBerry

Man, that sucks!! :bigcry: One of the things I like most about the buy out/merger was I picked up more friends/family in the combined network which allowed me to replace them w/others in "My Circle". Because of that I'm a little reluctant to want to change carriers. You'd think somewhere there would be some new Treo's to be had that would work on their network. Good luck getting it worked out.

AJ,
Did you happen to ask when you were at Alltel/Verizon if/when they will have the Pre available?

That's the best part. And because I just past the two year mark they gave me another 1 in "My Circle" so I'm up to 11. Between that and the M2M, that's about 80% of who I call.

Interesting article. My friend was telling me about the off site/online back up feature when I was expressing my concern of not having a SD card slot. According to that article that sounds like a really powerful feature. My biggest obstacle I think would be getting used to the smaller keyboard. When I tried it yesterday it wasn't as easy as the Treo, but it wasn't something I couldn't do.

Ditto here.
