It is now July 4 and this has never been corrected by HD, right ?  Did you use 2 gaskets on the backplate since the SERG does not have the injector cover plate.  The instructions say to use a gasket on each side of it.
I guess I had better get the bolts ordered !

You will need the breather bolts for sure and the kit comes with a thick gasket to use if you decide not to use the ugly cover which takes a gasket on each side.

Carefully placed stailess steel pieces to mask the uglyness and "blaness" of the backing plate for the heavy breather.

Hey JP that backing plate looks good and certainly deserves a second post.  Question: is your breather filter black or does it just look black?  If it's black please tell me where you purchased it.  I really dislike the maroonish colored filter that comes stock but can't find a black one.

vtyanqui, when you first install the Heavy Breather, the filter element is a pinkish maroon.  As you run it and it gets dirty, it will turn darker.  JP's has probably been on for a few thousand miles.  They are washable.  Remove the element, rinse in soapy water, dish soap is fine and let air dry before reinstalling.

So you sent your ugly back plate off to have chrome plated????      Sure would appreciate the info on where you sent it.

GregKhougaz – two weeks ago when I picked up my SERG I saw a Softail Springer that came with a black filter element sitting on the showroom floor.  I've since had my service department research their sources but nothing so far.  The service manager even contacted H-D and they said take a picture and send it to us.  I know somewhere in H-D land there are some, I'm just having difficulty finding out where.

I agree black filter element would look better but then you could not tell how dirty it was....  I think the color is for that reason though they sure could have picked a better color!  I looked for a different color through HD, K&N, etc. but found nothing.  If you do... please let us know.  Thanks!

Greg – if and when I find out I'll post it on our site.  I know they exist because both my service manager and I saw one; I just don't know how many hoops I'll need to jump through to get it.

it's not the filter material that is colored, it's the oil when you recharge the filter that is colored. when I clean my big sucker it dries white and then turns that marroon when I oil it.

Larry, I think that is correct for cotton filters.  I was told that the HD Heavy breather is paper.  Though washable, it's not supposed to be oiled.  I'm going to check on this....

I thought the heavy breathers filter was made by K&N

It is but it's paper, I think.
