New addition to the family...
« on: June 12, 2009, 09:20:24 PM »

Well today I picked up Petunia Pig (SERG).  :orange:  I have to say that the SERG is really nice on the road.  I had a Heritage Softail Classic for 7 years and and Petunia is my first touring bike.  I love the extra power and never realized what I was missing :pepper:.  Put 150 miles on it today.

Hit the interstate with the wife on the back.  She understandably states that the windshield (or lack there of) is the first accessory I need to buy.  Looking at the CV or Kuryakyn Air Master Windshield.

Petunia is suffering from the dreaded seat-gap-tus  :bigcry: (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=32923.0).  I would appreciate any info provoking the dealer to correct it.

Looking for some stock 96 headers to avoid having to core the exhaust.  Next then is the 2.0" Fulsac and a SERT.

Charles, congratulations on Petunia, she's beautiful. I have the Silver Ghost myself. As for the seat, IMO, don't stress over it too much, chances are you are going to change seats out anyway. Enjoy.

SSERT is a very expensive maping device, unless you are doing something that radically changes the compostion (cams, tb etc) there are much cheaper ways to do this. Give several hundred dollars for the SSERT, then the local dealer charges you several hundred dollars to "map" or tune your bike, when all most of them know how to do it take one of the canned maps from the list and load it into your ecm, also branding your s/n forever and wasting the part of the warranty that covers ecm problems. Or that is the way it is at the local dealer here.

Congratulations on your new SERG. I think that after you change out the windshield you will agree that it is hands-down the best Harley to own. I recommend the CV windshield because it works. I have the Clearview GT Small 11.5 in. light tint recurve windshield and it is perfect for my height of 5'10". I have tried several others and they all sit in a box. Start out with the CV (save yourself some money) and use it as your main windshield and experiment with others if you feel so inclined, but I guarantee that your BSR will appreciate the CV.
Some guys have got creative here on the forum and there are a few do-it-yourself fixes that you can do while you wait on a new seat or decide if you are going to buy an aftermarket seat. I got a new seat from the MoCo and it seems to be fine for now. I would recommend that you talk with your dealer and insist that they replace your seat with one that fits correctly or for them to pay to have it reworked at a reputable seat dealer of your choice. I showed mine to my dealer, they took pictures and they got it taken care of. I have heard that the MoCo thinks the problem was resolved, but stand your ground and get a seat that fits properly without the gap.

Charles, congratulations on the great looking bike. If you can't find a take off 96 catless header assembly, Zanotti sells them for about $315 plus shipping, which considering what you paid for the SERG, is not bad and you don't have to be concerned with any damage from the removal process of take offs. Good luck.

Well today was a good day :pineapple:

Laconia is going on this week in NH and the local H-D shop where I bought my SERG was selling their pulled parts.  The owner of the shop had her stock exhaust pulled and a set of V&H put on. When I inquired how much they wanted for the pulled exhaust they told me $100 for everything; header, crossover, tail pipes, and all mounting brackets.  Needless to say, I jumped on that before they changed their mind.

Next step is to look at getting them Jethot coated and punch out the tail pipes and have some Fullsacs installed.

Charles, you will also need to get the software reprogram for the ECM/fuel management system to change your air fuel ratio since you're going to have a lot freer breathing bike. Recommend you get the TTS Mastertune from Fullsac, since they also offer a dyno proven canned program for each of their core replacements for the CVO mufflers.

Thanks for the heads up fthngrg...

I have not really examined the muffler I picked up yet.  Does any know if the stock touring mufflers are the same as on the SERG?  If so, my plan is to pull the original exhaust and use the modified stock parts I picked up.

Charles, if the exhaust set you picked up is from a 96 cubic inch engine, the mufflers are not the same as the SERG mufflers. You mentioned going with Fullsac baffles and you install those inside the SERG muffler cans after you remove the HD baffles. The Fullsacs are much freer breathing. Since you already have a good aircleaner that is high volume and came stock with your bike, you really do need to install some sort of tuner or some softwatr to reprogram your ECM, which is what I am doing. I bought the TTS Mastertune from Fullsac when I bought their replacement baffles and they sent their canned dyno tuned map for your set up. So, as long as you have some basic computer skill, you should be able to install the fuelmap and be good to go. Lots of others have used TTS Mastertune with very good results.
