Led Light in Tour Pak
« on: November 14, 2005, 12:52:15 PM »

This weekend we took a ride over to New Symrna Harley and saw a new 05 banana on the floor we opened the tour pak and inside we found an LED Light as opposed to the useless light that came in my 05 tour pak.   Anyone else get this LED Light and have you had any issues with it and anyone know if the MOCO is swapping out the big useless light for this one that attaches nicely to the lock mechanism.   Unfortunately the battery wasnt attached to the one in the showroom so we couldnt check it out.

Thanks in advance,

Harry,
There was a service notice on our stupid useless too often failing original lights.  Dealers were suggested to replace the old one with the new one if it failed.  A lot apparently aren't doing it though.

However....

Get yourself part number 54331-04 .  It's the light and hardware for inside the tour pak and two lights that mount on the bottom of the tour pak to shine down inside of each saddlebag.  These lights actually work.  They shut off automatically if you leave them on too.  Nice pieces.

Any chance Don you know the tech article id on it ... my local dealer doesn't seem to be able to locate the tech article and the parts are like 109.00 bucks ...  even giving them the replacement part numbers wasnt enough for them to find it.

I will say though they are willing to try and have actually been great to deal with even though i didnt buy the bike from them.

Harry,
Just did a very quick look of my own copies of stuff and I apparently don't have a copy.  If memory serves it was never a mandatory replacement but was a suggested replacement at time of failure.  Here is the only reference to it I found on the site searching by "tour light bulletin."

Thanks Don,

I will call them again tomorrow and tell them its under the tech tip.   It is warranty right if it keeps draining the battery and not shutting off ?

Oh yeah, that's a definite failure.  Their big problem was that the damned things wouldn't turn off.  Then, whoopsie, dead battery.  Couple of guys had the light stay with a full tour pak.  Light stayed against something long enough to melt stuff and almost smoke a harness.  If your's is staying on it's a definite replacement.  You just may have to convince the shop to replace it with the right one.

Battery been dead now 3 times ....  I am quite sure I can make a case.   If not guess I will trailer the bike to them 3 more times then they will get tired of umm charging it and replacing the batteries ....  2 ways to skin the cat the easy way, because they know they should and then there is the how big a pain in the ass do you have to be, that they do it just so you stop coming there to complain.  Honestly Seminole Harley now called Central Florida Harley has been very very easy to deal with under warranty I doubt this will be a hassle.

Unbalanced,

I had mine replaced after it killed the battery twice.  It took a couple of discussions with the service manager before he believed me and looked it up, but indeed the MoCo has stopped selling the old light and it has instructed the dealers to replace the old version with the LED version if they have a warranty repair.  I do find it strange, however, that several of the dealerships I've visited recently still have the old version in inventory.  I would have thought a responsible manufacturer would have performed a recall and had the dealers return all of their inventory, to keep the defective ones from killing any more batteries or starting a fire.  ??

Hope this will help you, I posted this back on August 4th.

Custom Vehicle Discussions / FLHTCSE/FLHTCSE2 Screamin' Eagle® Electra Glide® / Re: DEAD BATTERY
 on: Aug 4th, 2005, 5:15pm
Well I have been having problems with my tour pak trunk light [smiley=confused5.gif].  I took it into the dealership and told them that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  I told them that if it doesn't come on I just tap it a few times and it comes on.  I told them about other people having problems with their lights not turning off and it kills the battery.  I told them that has never happen to me, mine just doesn't turn on all the time.  One of the service techs came out and tapped on it when the light flickered he said, it's bad.  They told me that they would replace the light.  I asked them not to replace it with the same Tour Pak Light part number 54302-98A.  I was told that newer LED Tour Pak Light Kit part number 54332-04 is now replacing the old Tour Pak Light.  So the new LED is on order.
So when I go out to get something out of my Tour Pak this morning no light.  I tapped on the light still nothing.  Turned the key, nothing.    The dealership told me that the battery tender will take 24 to 36 hours.  They told me that I could put a battery charger with a 2 amp charger and just keep checking the battery.
LED Tour Pak Light Kit part number 54332-04 is now installed and I haven't had any problems  [smiley=banana.gif].  The new LED Tour Pak Light  has 2 more connectors so if you wish to you can add two more sets of the LED Tour Pak Lights.  Keep your Battery Tender plugged in until you get it fixed.  That will keep your battery charged.  Good luck - Ride Safe   [smiley=helmet.gif]

I now have the LED light, but I do miss the automatic-on feature of the old version.  It also seemed to put out more light.  Just too bad H-D couldn't figure out how to come up with a decent switch for the old one.  BTW - the main benefit of the LED version is the automatic timer, which will shut the light off if you forget to do so.  If they had had that on the old light, this thread wouldn't exist.
