True Duals for SERG
« on: June 14, 2009, 11:17:38 AM »

I realize there are probably going to be a lot of people who tell me to use the search function for answers to my question, just so you'll know I have.

Here's my problem:
I replaced the headpipes on my SERG and removed the cat, changed the baffles to fullsac and added a SERT; all in an effort to reduce heat from the back of my engine.  I'm happy with the power, okay with the sound but very dissatisfied with the heat.  I rode 1,500 last week along the Gulf Coast and the heat on the right side was so bad it was miserable; instead of riding 200 miles between stops I was stopping at 100 just for some relief from the heat.  I'm not a candy ass and normally handle just about anything thrown my way.  When I got to FL my wife looked at my right hip/butt and said it looked almost burned.  My wife has a doctorate in nursing and teaches wound care, she told me it was definitely an issue I should deal with before taking a longer trip.  I'm working on plans for a 4,000 mile trip for Sept. and want to find a solution before I leave.

I got in touch with RJ about his heat shields, I had them on my Road King; he said the ones for the an '08 will fit an '09 but I wonder about the fitment with the changes in the new frame.

I'm thinking that if I can find a set of true duals with mufflers that have the right fit for extended bags I'll be able to move some of the heat away from my seat.

This group has always been a world of help and your suggestions will be appreciated.

I have a '09 serg and it is all stock at the moment.(still waiting on v&h's) and im not getting as much heat as i was with the set up i was getting on the 07 heritage (rush slip ons, arlen ness big sucka intake. and the v&h fuel pak. sometimes it would get close to 300deg.) my cuz has a 08 seuc and he has the hd race tuner and v&h true duels big shots and he says he is comfortable with little heat and it runs great. so thats what im doing on my 09 serg. hope that helps.

I installed the HD heat shields on my 09 SERG.  my heat issue is actually with the air cleaner.  I installed a RSD heavy breather.  It extends a couple more inched than the stock.  The air coming out of that is so hot that i have to put my right foot on the hiway pegs for some relief.  i would love some solution to the heat issue but I think it is just a 110 compromise.

You have air coming OUT of your air cleaner?  Maybe we are on the trail of the problem here.  On mine the air goes in there and comes out the shiny things at the back.

You did remove the cats out of both pipes, right?

hmm, gooid point and maybe I mis stated.  There certainly is alot of heat eminating from there (air cleaner) and it is of course super hot.  Air is not rushing out like a hair dryer, but it does feel like some air.

Jim,  A lot of us have the same or similar set up with out the heat issue.  That suggests to me that your tune may be too lean.  That would cause the heat issued.  Did you dyno tune?  If so, what is the AFR across the board?  Should be about 13.9.  Not sure that true duals would help.  They would likely hurt on the torque end.

Then again, you could try riding side saddle.   :nixweiss:

I have the HD Heavy Breather... it sucks (meaning that it draws in air, of course) and is not hot at all so that is really purplexing.   :nixweiss:   :nixweiss:  If it's leaking somehow.... that's not good

I have a similar set up on my '09 SERG.  New non-cat headpipe, 1.75 in. fullsacs., SERT & dyno tune.  Happy with everything (power, sound, midrange TQ), but the thigh still got hot on right side.  I took the head pipe off and had it ceramic coated at Ram Pro Line in las Vegas,  and they did a great job for ~$200.  Had the silver coating applied and it reduced the heat issue significantly.  Coating looks great, (95% is covered by heat shields anyway) and works as advertised.  Bike much more pleasureable to ride, especially ion the longer runs.  Just my .02.
