Tire Recommendations
« on: June 15, 2009, 06:55:20 PM »

Looking to replace standard front and rear tires for 2008 FLHTCUSE, wife and I on it 80% of the time together.  Looking for smoother ride & hopefully decent tire life.  Any recommendations?

A riding friend has 14k mi on rear, with tread left, always checks for proper tire pressure...

I just replaced my Dunlops with Metzler 880 on my CUSE4. I have run the Metzlers on Softtails and tire life is about the same as the Dunlops. After having the Dunlops on the CUSE4 cup and wear unevenly I did not want to put Dunlops on again. Metzler was the only tire with proper size and load ratings I could find.

I'm running the stock Dunlops and got 11k on this last one before it developed a bubble in the side. Dunlop warrantied 50% of the cost. The last one got 11k as well.

Michelin Commander's are proving to be an excellent choice for me.  Tommy (07hd110) recently reported better than 10K out of a rear tire with most of his riding done 2 up and loaded.  Of the top of my head, I don't know how many miles I have on the Michelins on both bikes, but they still look new, save for the absence of the "chicken strips."  Much happier with the ride of the Michelins than I was with Metzelers or stock Dunlops.

I like the Elite 3 and think the ride and wear is awesome just my 2 cents.

I concurr on the 88 metzler.  10K no problem.  The thing you must consider is the load range on the 140, 150 and 160 are very much different.  The 140 has the highest rating, the 150 the lowest of the three and the 160 upper middle.  I had the brake caliper shaved in order to accept the 160 on my 06 SE Ultra and absolutlety love the tire.  Dunlops give me wobble problems.  The 160 metzler fixed that.  Unfortunately on my last tire change they put on a 150 and I didn't catch it till the next day.  The 150 is giving me some grief--I'll put a couple of k on it then have it changed back out.

I picked by bike up again yesterday after the voltage regulator went out, after the total engine rebuild, after the total transmission rebuild. Well anyway, rear tire had a "bubble" in the side wall that my extended warranty with tire & wheels did not cover because it was not caused by a road hazard. Dunlop did however cover half the " retail cost" of the tire. 1 D402 MU85B 16 BW was $169.95. 10 wheel weights were $.59 plus $65 for installation. Total for a new rear tire = $240.85 + tax.

Any pics of the CUSE with the 160 ?

unfortunately not a close up of it.  The one I have was taken in hi res so cannot forward to the site.  It's 2meg.  Now I have the 150 on there so that doesn't help.

I Agree with Mr D.  He recommended Metzler's to me a few weeks back. :2vrolijk_21:  Had them installed on Thursday.  I rode home in a downpour first 20 miles and REALLY LIKED how they tracked the road.  They do seem to ride a little more firm than the Dunlops (which in mho was not a bad tire or bad ride).  I had the bike on the jack yesterday and really like the look of the tire and tread also.  I am hoping to go for a short 100 mile trip on Monday and then will post a ride report.

I was not able to find anything that would fit the 09 SEUC other than the Dunlop.  Do you have part numbers or sizes on the Metzeler 880's you put on yours?

Went for a 150 mile ride 2 up with my wife last Thursday.  Love the Tires!  We took some back roads at the coast that were under construction, bike tracked really well.  The Dunlops would catch the uneven pavement - pavement change in the road causing the front tire to not feel connected to the road.  I cannot feel it with the Metzlers at all and they ride smooth.  Nice tire I am Very Happy with them.   :2vrolijk_21:
