I thought also that knock control would take pinging off. How much advance should there be? I have Jims 131 and Daytona Twintec. I had quite a lot of pinging and then I decreased advance first 3 degrees and after that another 3 degrees. So now I have decreased 6 degrees of advance through the whole map. I believe still the highest numbers are  about 35 degrees. What is normal?

Mikko since there is no canned map I know of for the jims 120 or 131, the best starting place using canned maps is with the 1856 motor (113).  I have included a screen shot of the 264 cam timing tables from the front cylinder to give you an example.  The TTS map is the UF205-002-c2.mt7

I spoke to a guy at Reno Hd and the first thing out of his mouth was take the Jim's lifter's out and put in HD lifters. He also stated that the Jim's lifters were noisy.

from all the info I have received I now think it was bad gas from arco.....I filled up the tank with shell and it seems to be better....I am still testing.

ARCO runs the "hottest" gas mixture allowed and that's why it is the least expensive, the more ethanol you add the cheaper the gas.

We are near the refinery and had issues with Jeep fuel pumps one year and ran it back to "hot" gas.  When an ARCO employee came in with a bad fuel pump from another dealer we told him our suspicion without knowing he was with ARCO.

He asked to borrow the phone, dialed a number and said, "Charlie, are you guys running hot loads again?"  Swearing insued and the guy explained he only ran ARCO as a loyal employee.  He had four fuel pumps from the other dealer before he came to us thinking it was the dealer that had a problem.

Since then I only would run ARCO in an emergency.  Like I was pushing my vehicle and couldn't find any other gas or get a cell signal to call AAA.

Thanks for the tip Roger. I try to avoid Arco as they ding you another 45 cents to use your debit card and they don't take credit cards. Running premium that smarts on a bike fill up.

Thanks, I used this ignition map now and it runs fine. We changed the lifters to V-Thunder and they are clearly more silent. Still the valve train is quite noisy. I rode 50 miles and I think it is getting better in the lifter area all the time. My tech looked at the ignition map which I had done, he said it will make the engine run hot during cruising (I agree, I had made it wrong way) and he made it more aggressive copying partly one map they had done to S&S 142 inch engine. I tested a few miles and it was knocking only slightly so he decreased advance in some areas 10% and some areas 5%. I didn't test it anymore before leaving home. However on my way home the engine warmed up and started knocking heavily especially on 5th and 6th gear between 2000 and 3000 rpms. It knocked also above 5000 rpms. When I got home I changed the ignition map for this you sent. It is in some cells 30% less advance (than 142 map -5%/-10%) but some cells are almost the same. Now it is impossible to get knocking but maybe the engine has less power (compared to 142 map when engine was cold and not pinging). It is really cold here this week (below 10 C/50 F) so I let it be as it is now without starting experimenting. During travels in the north I may not find 98 European Octane fuel but only 95. Jims says 96 European oct is necessary. The engine seems to run surprisingly hot, oil at 100-105 C (212-221 F) after highway so in the city it gets even hotter. And this is a heavy touring bike so maximum performance maybe is not the first priority, it is not nice having pinging somewhere far away..

When I moved from Minnesota to Virginia the pinging stopped. My guess is the gas. That was on my 2005 CVO and now no problems on the 2009.

I've got about 10K miles on my Jim's 131 and she runs quite as a kitten. No pinging issues as well. This motor is a mule, i love it, but i will say i am a bit concerned with top end as I have heard these bad lifters stories on these engines a good many times. I'm out of the warranty period with Jim's so i can make a lifter switch but curious what people are doing with a fresh Jim's 131. Are you changing out lifters from the get go? I've also heard that Jim's makes the lifters for HD, if so that's not an improvement.  ???

Jim's doesn't make the stock lifters for H-D.  I believe they did make the SE lifters, at least at one time, but I'm not certain if that is still the case.
