PWC ~ Personal Watercraft
« on: June 21, 2009, 08:36:43 PM »

Wondering if anyone out there runs any jetskis? Any preferences? Kawasaki has a model with a supercharged 1,498cc engine. Claims to be the most powerful production PWC offered in the US. I'm sure Tommy will sing the praises of the Honda but Sea Doo and Yamaha are contenders. Just thinking out loud again.

AJ, you can't go wrong with any of them as long as they are a 4 stroke.  I'm Honda queer and that's what we have.
We have the non turbo Honda model as I figured the more complicated, the more that can go wrong.   It's an 02 F12 3 seater and have had no problems (knock wood).
Sea Doos and Yamaha's are the most popular.    Look around and get the most you can for the money.  Many northern states have new 2-3 year old ski's in stock with great savings over an 09..

Kawi's 26O claimed hp is a lot of ponies!  Seems like you can't go wrong with any of the manufacturers these days.

I have the SeeDoo Wake edition non turbo and it's plenty strong to pull a skier or wakeboarder. It has a pull up mini tower on the back for the tow rope with handles for the observer. It also comes with two detachable racks for wakeboards or skis and tie downs for a flag. When the kids come over it sure beats having to haul the boat out.  Doc

Bob, I'm not necessarily needing an '09 (or 2  ;D). Need something reliable at a good price. I've been boating all my life so know the pitfalls. I've recently downsized to just two boats, with one in negotiations for a sale.

Just for comparisons sake, my brother in law bought an 07 Sea Doo 255hp, which was brand new at our local boat show this winter w/o trailer out the door for $7800. 09's were 10 to 12K

Also, our powersports dealer was offering brand new 06 Honda F12's for $6400, also w/o trailer.

A agree with boatman about 4 strokes. I wouldn't give a dime for a 2 stroke. We have a weekend lake cabin and the two strokes are always being towed in.

I getting bit by this bug! I'm leaning heavily towards the Sea Doo, either the 255 or the 215. I really like the GTX Limited. This is a 2006 model:

4-stroke for sure.

I have a 2002 Yamaha FX-140 and it is flawless.  Same motor as the R-1 sportbike.
The newer yamaha 140 HO are substantially faster out of the hole.  Due to a better pump.
Take a look at what 90% of the rental places use and you will find Yamaha.

I am not sure about this but maybe Boatman can help with some personal first hand info.  We were riding our Yamaha's and there were three kids on a Honda when a boat went buy and left a wake they struggled and eventually tipped over...  My Yamaha is a stable hull, good luck tipping it over, mine has never been upside down...and I have tried.
I wanted to buy the Honda because I too, like Big Red but I was glad I got the Yamaha when I seen those 3 130lbers falling off the Honda.  This was when Honda just came out with the fourstroke so maybe the hull design has improved.

We've had several over the years, by far my favorite has been the SeaDoo's we had.  Of those it was the first year for the 4-strokes, GTX Limited (below).  The newer ones with the Intercooled Supercharger are the way to go.  The hull on these things will keep you dry, unless you don't wanna be.  The OTAS (Off-Throttle Assisted Steering) helps alot for low speed turning or forgetting that a jetdrive won't turn if your not under power.  But you can't go wrong with any of em anymore, as long as it's a 4-stroke.

Our Honda is stable and handles well.  The ride is not that great.

Personally, I do not like PWC's..  Wouldn't even have one if it weren't for my wife/daughter.  Would sell the PWC before the pontoon, but that's just being an old fart.    :cherry:

I started looking and that is what I came up with. It's a CVOized PWC!
