se pro 21 tooth sprocket
« on: November 17, 2005, 10:06:57 AM »

from what i have read, most members have switched to the 24/37 gear change and the six spead tranny.
has anyone tried the se 21/37 kit from harley? comes with a new chain.
i think it's around 139.00
i am going with the six speed, and want more pull out if the hole, but do not want to crush my gas milage.

king,

I believe your mistaken on the price the clutch basket is over 350.00 for the 37 side.
I have not checked the price on the 21 tooth counter sprocket, but can tell you unless someone goes with a very tall 1st and 2nd gear with the 6 speed the bike will be very torqy down low and you will be blasting through the gears vs cruising through them.   I had this on my ultra and ended up paying extra to go to the R2 gearing from Baker due to ridability issues ... Its fine if all you want to do is race light to light, but for cruising it was rough.

You may want to take a look at the final drive numbers.   With a 21 tooth front, 36 basket and 32 front belt and 70 final drive i am at a 348 gearing most are trying to stay between 315 and 337.

If I were going to change I might change to front 24/37 rear 32/70 (337)  or 25/36 rear 30/70 or even seen 24/37 30/70  These are known good configurations.

Racing I used front 21/36 chain rear drive not belt rear 21/50 rear wheel for a 415 gearing

thank you for your reply.
my friend mike sent me to www.nightrider.com
they have all the gear conversions formulas.
if i go with the 21/36 the final drive will be 3.75
that is way to hairy for everyday cruising.
i am going with the 24/37=3.37 with the six speed as you suggested.
is should give me more pull down low, without compromising gas milage.
right now i get around 41mpg even when i am beating on it.
thanks again.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, kng103,
Where in the Hell have you been, man?  I ran that 21 tooth Engine Sprocket on the "Led Sled" for one trip.  It is definitely for racing purposes, only!  Jerked that chit off as soon as I got back.  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] I've still got it and the chain, if you want it.  Please advise.  Later--HUBBARD

i'm back in the saddle again.
chit, i only did around 2k this year.
now i am planning for next. the bike is already at the stealer.
they don't know chit! thank god for this website or i would be changing gears again in the spring.
does the gear change give you more torque, or just bring in in a little earlier?
i am thinking it's the latter.
anyway, i'll be checking in a little more now.

It gives you more torque in every gear...I predict that you're gonna love it.  And the six-speed is a must if you make the gear change.  I love it, and everyone I know that has made the change loves it.

"It gives you more torque in every gear"
i see how it can get the torque in a little faster, but i do not see how it will increase. can you please explain.
thanks in advance.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, kng103,
I would beg to differ the ratio change increases torque.  The torque you have is what you have.  The ratio change would bring your peak torque in much quicker, that's all.  Again, I just plain didn't bond with the 21 Tooth Sprocket, even with the six-speed.  If you ride aggressively, it will keep you against the rev-limiter all the time, and work your motor to death!  There endeth the lesson.  Glad you're back, kng!  Later--HUBBARD

yo hub,
i have to agree with your logic.
the torque is what it is.
i'lll just get there quicker.
i guess the only way to really determine it, is to have it dyno'd when it's done.
i think my sled has spent enough time on the dyno for now. she finally runs the way i want her to.
thanks for chiming in.

Well, for what it's worth, I had mine dynoed before and after the gear change, and it increased the torque curve almost 5% in every gear...and it remains one of the most satisfying mods that I have done to the bike...and there have been many.  So, whether you do it because of logic, or whatever, just do it...you'll like it, and you WILL feel it pulling stronger in every gear.

HUBBARD-

I'm thinking of going with the same ratio 3:37 with the HD 6spd. It'll be going into my 113" set-up when finished. My question to you is; What RPM's do you run at 80 to 90mph? How about 60 mph in 5th? I just don't wanna be all revved up when I'm running down the concrete river. If you can give me a ball park figure I'd appriciate it.

Thanks,

Grover
