Don, I've run into the same thing out at Dreams...I was on the Vrod that day.  Guy pulls up on a bike like mine, and I told Suzanne from 30 feet away the guys got chitty paint.  He's got a couple of other bikes I've seen him on too.  We shot the chit about his bike...he'd let the local dealer install a set of bars on the bike, and EXPOSED ALL THE WIRING...didn't run it inside the bars, cause the bars weren't made for it.  I was trying to decide whether I should tell the guy he had bad paint the whole time I was talking with him...trying to feel him out for a reaction to being told his "baby" looked like it's diaper needed changing.  I decided against it.  Most people walking around are a lot bigger than me, and he had friends....I did tell him about the site, but obviously he never joined.  I wish I had been on my big bike that day, and just pulled it up next to him, the difference would have been apparent to him then.

My baseball bat won't fit into the tourpak....

It's difficult to understand why someone would willingly ugly up and dumb such a nice bike just because a dealer said he couldn't run wired or the guy was unwilling to look for other bars.  Lack of initiative, a little lazy and too damn dumb to know any better.

You could try, in a completely friendly manner, to do a guy like that a favor.  Let him know that, admittedly with some real effort on his part, he could actually get a brand new paint set and make the bike look a lot better.

And the guy might just get really pissed off.  That's the reaction apparently when it is pointed out to some that they were too damn dumb to notice something that obvious themselves when they should have initially or as it progressed over time.  Rather than worry about fixing the problem they are more concerned with saving face and not being caught out having screwed up.  And that, to bring this full circle, is why some will never get their paint sets fixed.  They'd rather live with it now than admit they ever potentially screwed up.

Hell, I screw up all the time.  It's part of the amusement of the day sometime.  Sure as hell wouldn't let not admitting a mistake keep from me from shiny new paint.  But there be dipsticks out there who just don't see it that way (damn I hope that guy eventually logs in here).

When I was struggling with the MoCo about the new tins I kept telling myself I would NEVER have noticed the paint mis-match myself.  I know that but once it was pointed out to me here I could not believe I missed it.  I guess I don't know how I would have felt if someone else showed me face to face.  The one exception I think I would have made if it was someone telling how it happened to HIS bike and showed me the difference.

But the feeling I had when it was finally made right was priceless  :2vrolijk_21:

It should still be under the original (two year) warranty so you "should" be covered. You should talk to your dealer and see what they have to say.

WELCOME Tinman!

This is one of those problems that will test your mental toughness, BUT once you see that bike with new paint in the sun it will all be worth it.  Most of us had some varying degrees of pushback from MoCo but we had a good bit of success by not giving up.  A few guys are still fighting and I hope their success comes soon.

Don't wait though, I would scoot down to your friendly dealer TODAY!

Good luck! :2vrolijk_21:

Tinman, go for it. I didn't complain about mine right away either and had very good luck getting it taken care of. Make sure you check every striped part closely so you can get them all at the same time. Also, check the replacements closely when they come in as many of them are bad also.

Good luck!  :2vrolijk_21:

Welcome to the site Tinman.  You should go in and make a claim.  Do not go ask them about it.  Just tell them you'd like to have the defective paint replaced.

Let them know, if they ask, that you are aware of others that have been replaced on warranty and you need yours done as well.  The paint does seem to cloud differently over time and tell them you have started to notice the "major" difference between the inside of the front fairing and the outer fairing as well as the difference between the top of the hard bags and the lowers.  If they ask what parts you are concerned with, tell them all of the painted parts with stripes.  These include tank, fairing, front fender, hard bags and side covers.

The paint is a "known defect" and they have little defense for not doing the replacement while it is under warranty.

Let us know how it goes.  Especially if you don't get the claim filed on your first visit to your dealer.  IMO your selling dealer would be the best place to start with a claim.

Except they're not.  And won't ever be.

Was out riding for a few hours this afternoon.  Pulled in to the local dealership to answer nature's call and get a drink of water.  Parked next to  an 06 SEUC that was noticably bad from 20 feet away.

Without thinking about it beforehand asked the guy sitting on the bike how long he'd been waiting for his new paint.  "New paint?" he asked, "what new paint?"

Immediately thought "uh oh" as by the tone of his voice you could tell the guy thought I was saracastically saying his bike was uglier than hell.  I briefly told him of all that happened with so many people suffering through this problem and that he too was obviously a candidate for new tins.

The guy was still pissed.  Said his bike "looked great" and that he didn't appreciate my "smart mouth."

He did then call his own dealer while he was sitting there though.  Said the service manager was a friend of his who would give him the straight scoop.  The "friend" told him not to worry, there was no such wide ranging problem, said his bike was "perfect" and that the guy feeding him this "bullchit" was a "f*****g asshole" just trying to cause trouble.  Then to emphasize the point he called me a "f*****g asshole" again and flipped me the bird.

At that point I told him he was right, I was mistaken, and that his problem wasn't bad paint.  His problem was a dumass owner willing to ride an ugly ass bike with bad paint rather than accept a little well intended advice and admit he was too damn dumb to see the obvious.  Also said something about the overall appearance of the bike being a perfect mate (dull and ugly) to the appearance of the passenger and offered a suggestion as to him being the last piece in the matched set to ride them both.  Things might have actually gone downhill from there but he got mad and rode away.

Which only proves the old axiom, "All it takes is money". Hey, the guy was a crudnut... what can I say?? :nixweiss:

I agree 100%. It isn't a glaring defect a person notices right away. Once you notice it though, it seems to become much more obvious. While I was waiting on replacement parts every once in a whils someone would say that paint looks kind of brown - it was supposed to be black emerald. I had my bike about 6 months before I put in a claim. I think most people had their bikes for a while before questioning it. It is a known problem. In my opinion the Moco should be ashamed for not doing a recall or at least advising their customers and offering a fix.
